No 338 Magnum for me!!! Heres why......

The biggest thing holding me back from jumping up to one of the 338 mags is the fact that I already own a JET suppressor in 30 caliber and dont particularly want to buy another one for a 338 Mag.

I have done my research here, there is no question that the 338 bore magnum is the way to go, but I want to stay with the 30 caliber for now and see how close I can get.

During my reading, lots of guys championed the 300WM with the 208, 210, and 220 grain bullets. I have a very good shooting 300WM, but Im looking to see how close I can get to the 338 magnum performance with the 30 caliber bore.

Hence, I have concluded I would like to try the 300 RUM and set it up for heavy bullets. Research here indicates the 240 SMK is poorly shaped for its weight. So my question here is if you were going to do a 300 RUM with a heavy bullet, which would it be? I already have dies and brass for a 300 RUM and I have my eye on a rifle that is available locally. My feeling is that I will burn up the factory barrel before deciding after all to barrel to 338/300RUM or stay with the 300 RUM. What will the factory Rem 300 RUM barrel stabilize?

While you guys are at it, what would the correct bottom metal be for the 300 RUM for a remington 700? You guys who have the ballistic programs are invited to help me out here....

There was not a whole lot of info on this site on the 300 Norma mag....mostly a contest as to if it really did exist....

I would go with the Berger 210 VLD's or 208 Gr A-max. That 300 Rum most likely has a 1-10 twist and will stabilize the heavier pills.

I would try Retumbo or RL25 powders to start.

I would recommend H1000 as well and run the #'s at JBM with the 240 smk's. If not the 240's I agree with the 208 amax and 210 bergers.

I was gonna build a 300 rum but fell into a 338 barrel and ended up with an edge. The 300 rum appears to be a hellava round.

Bottom metal would be any LA metal. If you want a DBM systyem, the seekins system allows max oal of 3.940" but I don't care for the mags and the fact they are VERY position sensitive when installing in his metal. They is no such thing as a quick mag change with it. If still wantinng a dbm, go with aics mags.

I am trying to do the exact same thing that you are. Not too long ago, I spoke with Sierra. They seem to offer the heaviest bullets for the 30 cal with the 240 SMK. The gentleman I spoke with said that it strictly depends on the twist rate for the rifle. The factory 1 in 10 rate was not optimal, but he noted that if you got one that was cut just a little faster, at say 1 in 9.8 or similar, that it may work. He recommended for best performance to definitely go with a 1 in 9 twist rate. I plan to try the 240 SMK. If it doesn't work, I'll shoot the 220 and order a 1 in 9 twist in the meantime or just step up to the 338 Edge.

Your 2 bottom metal choices are Badger and Seekins.

If money is not a huge concern - try JLK heavy 30 cal bullets. High BC... They are consistent too. F-class nationals (1000 yard) was recently won with them.

If you stay with a thutty cal magnum, go long! at least a 28" ++ barrel.

Well, I put the 300RUM on lay away today....should hopefully have it in hand soon and get it threaded for my JET supressor.

Another question comes to mind...I wonder if there is a good 50 caliber class powder I can buy in bulk for this thing...?

Head2h2o, I would most certainly appreciate it if you would keep me advised on your project. Since we are both trying to do the same thing it would certainly help to compare notes.

Well, if the factory Remington 300RUM barrel doesnt perform, it will promptly come off the gun and something new will go on!

+1 I agree! If you want to build a beast then do that. I'm pretty sure the guy that came up with that combo calls it a .300 hulk. The numbers on that thing are amazing, but like the other guy said it's a barrel burner. If it's not a big deal for you to swap barrels you could go ahead and do the hulk while your at it.

I saw a long thread on the HULK somewhere, I will reasearch it some. Thanks for the note.

I can remember me and my buddy were at SnipersParadise some 10-12 years ago and there was a guy smacking LaRue targets with a 30-378 or some such at 1000 yards. I dont know what he was shooting but that bullet was getting there RIGHT NOW! Plus it was smacking the sheeit out of them LaRues. I remember being damn impressed.

I did some reading on the HULK, pretty dang impressive for sure.

I should have the 300 RUM in hand this week, from everything I have read about it, if the barrel is a shooter, it should be one whale of a ctg. Still gotta scare up some rings, a stock, and bottom metal....

I have owned a 30/338 Lapua and 8 different 300 ultra mags
and have a 300 norma in the works which is very close to the Hulk
but you don't have to form brass. As well as 4 338 Lapuas,

what is it you are trying to do with this weapon??

Well you are obviously the man with the plan!

Aside from banging on steel targets far far away, I will most likely use the rifle to kill things like deer and hogs. Looking to step UP from my 300WM, but not all the way to a 338 Lapua for the reasons stated in my first post.

If you have owned 8 different 300 Ultras there must something to recommend the cartridge itself....

I think the 300 Norma would be a great choice. I have a custom rifle I built last year that is similar to the 300 Norma except with a 30 degree shoulder. It is called a 300 JAZZ. Will shoot the 210 Berger @ 33150-3200fps , 28" barrel ,and do it in a standard magbox of 3.60

That sounds pretty interesting, but thinking about it, the bolt face for the 300RUM and the Lapua are different meaning for my chosen platform I would need a aftermarket bolt or to modify the bolt I already have.....

Im all about wildcats. I have several. 22BR, 223AI, 6.5/08AI, and 6x and some handgun wildcats....but they sure can get expensive!!!

Im going to give the 300 RUM a serious shot before I yank the barrel off and switch to something else.

2 dogs, I cant belive no one mentioned this, but if you want near 338 performance out to 1800 yards and still be able to use your 30cal suppressor, how about 7RM/WSM/SAUM? Loaded with 180 Bergers, or the new 7mm bullets that Berger is comming out with, it will keep up with 338 out to 1800 yards, and cost much less to reload, especially if you go with 7SAUM/WSM.

I see you like wildcats.Here's my solution to the problem.My 30-375Ruger.240SMK's at 2925fps 78 grains of H-1000.I've got a little over a thousand rounds through the barrel and it shoots great still.I've shot it at a mile more than a few times and it does well.

Pearce rifles.He ran into health problems and was retiring last time I talked to him.

It's a modified Anschutz prone stock,Tubb butt with a Surgeon XL action and Jewel trigger.
