no love for the quarter bores

i see posts for the .22, .30, 6mm, 7mm bores but not for the .25 calibers i have a 25-06 i use for long range shooting and serves me very well to 800 yards would just like some info on why there not as popular as rest the calibers out there i use mine from prarie dogs to deer year round

+1 on the bullet selection, But I still love my 25-06. I shoot a 100 gr SMK and 50 gr of H4831sc, she will shoot .3 to .4 with that load.

Its definitely a great whitetail or varmint cartridge. If bullet selection was better it would be quite the contender I would imagine.

Same with the .270 in 140/150grains. Not much out there excetp Berger bullet and there VLD-hunting line. I love the 270wsm and think it would be a contender but like they say no bullets.

Never liked the quarter bore. And I owned several. Including two 257 Wbys. So I gave them a good try. IMO they are too little for the big stuff. And too big for the little stuff. Basically in between for every use. Tom.

The 25 WSSM kinda interests me in the Oly Arms AR15 upper. It's a 24" heavy bbl.

Pushing a 115gr Berger VLD (BC .513) at 3150 fps, it would retain about 1750 fps at 1K (local atmo), and get there in about 20 moa. Only 5.5 moa 10 mph f/v wind correction at 1K.

I had the opposite experience Tom. I really liked my 25-06 for deer and antelope sized game. Always thought it was about perfect and the majority of the animals I shot with it acted like they were hit with Thor's hammer. No tracking neccesary. damaged coyotes pretty well but I wasn't hunting for fur so I didn't mind.

Savage's .250-3000 had, at one time, some popularity as a benchrest caliber.

+1, I also had the same experience. I shot my first Mulie with my 25-06, and my first elk, I've shot AT

many coyotes with it, even nicked a couple, but I have killed way too many PD's to count with it. I could use it for anything I do, but I'll admit, it has its limits.

I shot nothing but my 25-06 AI for 25 years.
it is hard to beat the 87 gr at 3920 fps for varmits
and the 100 grain for deer.

I was raised with the 25-06 cal and have dropped to many deer, white tail, black tail , antelope and more ver the last 40 years. I have 6 one shot kills on elk with a 25-06 at a distance of no more than 300 yards. All were with 120g core lock rounds. Noslers have lost me 2 white tail leaving no blood trails. I pull the trigger wishing for a better selection of rounds though. Limited to 120 g has its downside.
Love the round and have many guns to select from.

Love my 25-06. Shoots flat, hits pretty solid, plenty accurate if I do my part, recoils like a 30-30. Sure, bullet selection is slim but I do like the Barnes 100g triple shock x.

1/4 bore...Love it...It's kind of like shooting 308, but faster. It's a cartridge the industry has left one balled, and why....enough..reload what you can..if you want to get real serious talk to corbins...

The 25/06 is a GREAT hunting round. The bullet selection is the downside for long range shooting. Even though the berger 115 looks good on paper, it's really the only thing for a 1/4 bore that can hold a stick to some of the other calibers as far as BC's goes.
If your rifle likes the bergers then you aren't doing too bad but if she doesn't then you are pretty much outta luck.

As a side note, I thought that I recently read somewhere that in some highly regarded international sniper competition the winner used a modified Remington Sendero in 25/06.

My Dad has had 3 .275 Wby's and he likes them a lot, He shoots groups around 1.25" or bigger and that is good enough for him for hunting. I have shot his rifles several times and I am glad I went with the .30 cals , 308, 300WSM The bullet selection is a big downside to the .257

You said it right "too little for the big stuff. And too big for the little stuff". When I shoot small critters I go with 22250 and bigger critters .308 ,300WSM and even .338RUM.
I may try a 25WSSM some day but it is way low on my gun list.
