This is my Dad

He had a heart attack today and whilst having said heart attack drove himself to the hospital and walked in the ER. Of course, they took him straight back and the word is he actually asked the doctor "Is this a real heart attack?". One emergency surgery procedure later and he's doing pretty good, looks like he'll be in the hospital for a couple days and then he can go home.

I told him that if he wanted to get out of shooting this weekend all he had to do was say so.

I'm glad he's staying IN the hospital for a few days. I've lost more than a few friends over the years, whom went through a 'minor episode' and out of sheer stubbornness, checked out of the hospital and went home because "they're tough" and "I don't like hospitals" and you know the rest.

Then, about 6ish hours later, they had a MASSIVE heart attack, and died right there.

Please ensure he don't repeat that pattern. Blessings and Prayers!

Thats what I did, only I had the heart attack the night before while sleeping, got up and took some Bayer 80 mg and went back to bed. Woke up still feeling like sh*t, drove myself 30 miles to town to the ER. Told the receptionist I was having a heart attack. They drew blood. Yup, you're having a heart attack. Next morning had a stent put in. 95% blockage of the widow maker.

Your dad should feel better after he gets over the initial shock and his head clears. That may take a few weeks.

I almost lost my dad to a heart attack today. Doctor described it as a widow maker. Thankfully he made it. They put two stints in him. Dad said the pain was horrible. Mom said his skin turmed white and his lips turned blue. He has had a slight fever the last couple of days. Of course he tested positive for covid. Doctor says covid caused it. Interesting thing is he has had two pfizer shots. I am obviously questioning in my mind, but can't realy say anything in front of my mom or brother. He literally got a new life insurance policy two months ago. After the checkup they said he was the healthiest 72 year old that they ever signed up. Maybe it is just old age. Almost lost my hero. Feeling blessed to still have him.

My grandfather did the same thing when he had his heart attack, drove himself in. They gave him a quadruple bypass and he hammered out another 12 years on his terms. He was a naval officer through the WWII pacific campaign. Watched the first Corsair come in hot and do a go around on Guadalcanal.

I have to go to my sister in law, grandfathers funeral on Monday. He was 97. I did not know until today, but he stormed the beach Palaui Island. Now knowing I am going to quiz my brother for what stories that he knows.

Thanks for all the replies, I just got back from the hospital and he's doing good. Things went about as well as it could've gone today from his proximity to the hospital when he made the decision to go to the cardiac team jumping on the situation. Dad was awake for everything, he said that when the looked at the second EKG they pretty much stopped talking to him and went into go mode.

It also turns out that not only did he drive himself, he parked in the damn ER parking lot and hoofed it in, my dude was literally walking uphill in cold and ice while having a heart attack. But wait there's more, he said he got a little ways from the truck but realized he didn't have a mask so he went back, got his mask, and when he got into the ER saw a big pile of them lol. I said "Dad, why didn't you just pull up to the front entrance?" He said "well, I don't know, I didn't want to get towed"...."Dad, it's a county vehicle, I think it would've been alright"

My dad had a heart attack many, many years ago. I came home to a note from paramedics saying he’d called and complained of chest pain and was taken to hospital X.

I got there and the Dr’s told me they weren’t sure he would make it through the night. I went back to see him and he told me he’d be fine, but for me to not miss my first day on my new City job the next day. I was 18 and couldn’t have cared less about that job looking at him in that hospital bed. Work was important to him. Even in that situation.

He made it through and lived for many more years. I’m sure your dad will too. The world still needs men like him.

My aunt had a series of mini heart attacks over the course of like 4 days a few years ago. She thought she had the flu. Finally went to urgent care on day 4 because she couldnt shake "the flu"... They were going to call an ambulance to take her to the ER and she said "no I wont pay for that, ive been fine for 4 days, ill drive"... and drove herself to the ER... LOL...

Now she is scared to death of Covid... Had like 8 shots... and still wont barely leave the house... I asked her what happened to the crazy lady who had a 4 day heart attack and drove herself to the ER....

He worked in the construction industry for pretty much all his life. We were project managers at the same company for a few years before it tanked and then he went to work for the county and I went to work in another part of the construction business.

Word is he'll go home tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for all the well wishes.

I've got a similar story about my grand-dad. A handful of years before I was born, he was working for an outfitter, packing horses and mules into the wilderness in late October, getting a hunting camp set up. He and his partner were in the middle of saddling up their horses to ride back out to the trail head when Grandpa realizes he's in the middle of a heart attack! So what the hell does he do? He gets on his horse, rides 14 miles out of the wilderness to his truck, drives himself about an hour or so back home to my grandma, who's a surgical nurse. Grandpa describes how he's feeling, and Grandma shouts him back into the pickup, where she drives them both straight to the hospital. Turns out he'd had a widowmaker, but the Doc thought that maybe the strenuous activity of riding his horse had helped partially clear the blocked artery, buying him enough time to get home, in time for a bypass surgery.

In any case, he had another one a few months before I was born, and needed another bypass. Doc told him to lay off the salt. Guess what Grandpa said? "Carve it on my headstone."

He passed a few years back, just a couple weeks before his 90th birthday. He figured he had lived 30 years of borrowed time, and in my estimation, didn't waste a second, teaching a passel of grandsons to be just as stubborn and tough as he was.

Unless he's under Doc's direction to the contrary, take him out for a ribeye and a whiskey and ask him to share a few more stories.
