Nomad Long Range Monthly Shoot
3rd Sunday of the month
Douglas, Wyoming on Wagonhound Road south of Douglas off of Esterbrook Road

Match is similar to the Sporting Rifle Match in Raton with a walk
through course of roughly 63 targets spread out over ten stations over about 2 miles of walking. Therefore, if you want to use it, you must be able to pack it. It gets really hot here at times and water and a snack or two is a good idea. One shot per target with several bonus targets in the 1,000 plus yard area. 85% of targets are in the 500-600 yard distance. $35 entry fee with $10 going back into prize money. Pay out to how many places will be determined by number of shooters. I hope at least top two of each group, and only money put in to either hunting or practical/tactical will pay back out respectively.

Match meeting location is on attachment to this email and you must have google earth on your computer to view it. If you can't do that find Douglas WY on a map. Go to west side of town and find Esterbrook Road that leads south out of town. Roughly 7 miles a dirt road called Wagonhound Road exits off to the west. Follow it for roughly 3 miles until you see a either a white CHEVY truck (mine) or shooters and there you'll be.

Currently I will be running two catagories: 1)tactical/practical
rifle, and 2) hunting rifle. Such is determined by scope and rifle combination. If your running a dope card it's practical/tactical. No rifles shooting faster then 3300ft/sec to limit steel damage. No FMJ/steel core rounds.

Sight in range opens up at 8am and the shooters meeting starts at 9am. If you arrive after the meeting has started it will be unlikely you will be able to shoot. Waviers will be signed before any shooting takes place.

It's a fun and very diverse coarse with about every type of shooting position possible. Want to get better at hunting/rifle
matches/marksmanship show on up and have a fun time. No target ranges will be given and you can either use seperate range finders and ranges or share with a friend. I chose this to help out with becoming more proficient with all of ones gear.

I just finished hosting the Snipers Hide Cup so if you've seen any pictures from that match, you'll be shooting in the same terrain, or at least until I figure out how to post pictures.

Any questions please call me!

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Guys I helped Justin put some of the targets in and layout part of the course. Come check it out, you won't regret it. Doesn't matter if your an experienced shooter at this type of match or a hunter prepping for the season. It will be great practice for the hunter and very challenging for the most experienced tactical shooter. A great place to get your "feet wet" if you've been on the fence about going to a match.

Justin, thanks in advance for the hard work putting this together.

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Couple of us from Gillette will more than likely be down. This month thet match is Sunday the 15th which I don't believe was mentioned for anybody else interested in showing up. Should be a good time!

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

If there is any confusion it is this coming Sunday July 15th. A big thanks should be mentioned to Shane C of Thunderbeast Arms for without his motivation doing this might never have happen. He is also the one I have to thank for the most expensive hobby Ive ever had...and all the knowledge I have. Rock chucks are in much more danger due to you.

Thanks my friend.

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Is there a range card for the targets like at Raton for each stage or does the shooter have to find as well as range the targets? Is there a time limit per stage? Can any caliber of rifle be used, just keep the velocity below 3300 fps?

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

There will be no range card and a time limit of 5 minutes. Youll have time as an individual or group to find and range the targets before you shoot or you can try and see how well you have your system down. There are lateral limits that will get you well on track.

Currently .243 to .338.

Come on David, you can do it; give it a go!

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Jeff, I am a certified member of the old and slow club. These rules seem doable for me since you are not timed on finding and ranging the targets. I can't do it this month, but definitely will give it a go. Nomad L.R. thanks for putting on this match.

Glad to hear you will compete in the future. This is a great venue and Justin is a good guy. This is the same place we (Competition Dynamics) ran the Sniper's Hide Cup last month.

Justin:
It was a really good time. I wish there could have been more wind and heat!! Many thanks to you for all of the hard work and effort. I think the match will only grow in attendance. Lots of good shooters and a major Congrats to Mike and Shane for shooting the top score and to all who shoot in really tough conditions. Thanks again.

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

I can't thank all of the shooters for traveling far only to power through the typical "wild" conditions of Wyoming! The rules will definitely allow any/all types of portage folk/critters for the August match. Thanks to all the laughs, and sweet that was had and lost. I'll be posting a few pictures too and thanks Sky for beating me to the punch. The coming version will have the coarse decreased in overall walking length with a few more closer and larger targets.

I believe the high for the day was just under 100 degrees with wind gusting almost to thirty mph. There were no easy shots to be had, and the overall coarse is no gimmy. Everyone packed their gear for several miles up and down, adn down and up.

I want to again say great job shooters for really pushing yourselves...

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Justin I agree with Shane that the walk is kinda long for the format but I wouldn't change the target sizes just yet . Fritz fixed my broke ass rifle last night maybe next time it will make it all the way through .

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Hey guys!

The shoot will be on the 19th of August and I will be shutting down until spring for hunting/ice climbing seasons. Looking forward to another GREAT time though hopefully a few less degees above 90...

Until then,

Justin

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Chuck and Shane,
I plan on relocating stations 9 and 10 (furthest east) somewhere amongst 1-5 some how. I can say I was happy to make it back to the truck after what looked like a nice 1.5 mile walk. Not that far, but a touch less would make it more appealing that's for sure.

Thanks for that sling too Chuck! It would have been marginal for me packing that pig around otherwise.

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Im glad youve seen it then, and hopefully I was able to meet you and shake your hand. I love sharing my place and see folks have a good time.

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

this was an awesome match. brutal, but very challenging and fun.

my first thoughts are to shorten the length as well, but after driving 4 hours each way, and using up a whole weekend, I really like spending all day shooting.
Also, the last 2 stages, even though an evil uphill trek on the way back, we're 2 of my favorite stages. the light pole was ingenious, and the last stage had us shooting in winds that required over 2 full values for wind. very fun/evil
smile.gif

some things I would change:
-better markers between stages. we got lost once and had to back track. prob our faults but still. ha.
-smaller groups. I think we had 5 in our group and we finished. another group had 7 and quit with 2 stages to go. over half the stages were unoccupied with the limited number of people. I would make the groups so small to fill every stage if possible. that would really speed things along.
- fix the shooting order so once you finish 4, you have to walk all the way to 10 and work the stages back towards the truck. that would make the uphill part bearable as you break it up in sections. but guess this would only work with a smaller crowd like what we had.
- that walk to 10 is evil. if you do eliminate 9&10, try to heep the shooting off a post idea somehow.

anyways, match was awesome. for first timers, bring plenty of water. and some extra. I got mildly dehydrated and that's never a good thing.
funny with the heat and wind, how tough hitting those targets really were.

regards
DT.

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Hi Justin:
Just have to add my 2 cents.
I think you put on a great match. There is very little I think you should change. I think the COF was very good. Yes it was hot, windy, and some walking. I would not chaange the walking part and we can't change the hot and windy. I see these types of matches to be, by design, a test of many things. The physical component is there as a part of that design. There are several different disciplines that are geared towards shooting only. This match is multi faceted. I hope you don't change it.
Thank you for all the hard work, time, and energy.

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Damn, so no match in September 'eh? I'll be ice climbing too this winter to take my mind off my form-4 wait!

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Nomad,
If you ever move it to a Saturday match, I will be coming down for sure a couple of times a year.
That is, if you will allow a specialty handgun.
Just a couple hours drive due north of you.

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Kraig,

I like your line of thought man...and to be honest that pack friend of yours would fit in well on some of the hills.

xphunter,

If you ever want to come on down I bet I could at least show you around and shoot a few stages...

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Justin,
Thanks!
I would enjoy that.
Now is to find the time
crazy.gif

Gearing up for archery antelope and elk.
Then, will be using several specialty handguns after that during the rifle season.
My contact info is all over because of me being the US dealer for another gun related item, so I don't mind posting my home # 307-257-7431

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

To those it may concern: Im heading out to get some range cards set for you folks and see if there are any other areas I can tweak to keep the August shooters from getting too bored, not sweat, or have a challenging shot station...

Ill get some pics.

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

My nephew and I will be there this Sunday (8/19/12). Be advised, all motels in Douglas are full due to the oil boom and the Wyoming State Fair. We're staying SA night in Casper and doing the 40-ish mile commute SU morning to Douglas. It will be the first ever match of this type for the both of us. I figure learning will occur. Best regards, ELN.

I think Beck and Tom are shooting the match for sure. Jess is baby sitting. I am slammed at work, but I might try and make it up Sunday morning. RJ

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Hey folks!

Lookong forward to another great shoot! I ran the camera over with the 4-wheeler so the pictures are trashed but got its replacement for the weekend. Weather should be MUCH less like the sahara and more high alpine desert like. Shooters meeting still at 9am at the same location with the ability to sight in starting at 8am the same.

Until then,

Justin

Re: Nomad Long Range Monthly Rifle Shoot Douglas, WY

Is Chuck running the mighty .338 again? Ive got a buddy with a geared up 300 ultra mag going to shoot so he wony be alone bang'n away with a big boom stick! And I though my almost 60 grains of powder was a lot....

Thanks again Tommy Two Dog for the kind offer but everything should be a go!

Cheers,

Justin

So no need for rangefinders?
