First, let me introduce myself to the forum since this is my first post. I'm a regular guy who loves to shoot guns....any guns. I don't work in law enforcement, although I'd love to pursue a late-in-life police career. I immensely respect the profession and would be honored to someday consider myself an officer of the law.
Anyhow, I've recently developed an interest in tactical long-shooters, preferably .308, for recreational shooting. Competitive shooting may interest me someday, but I currently just like to buy some ammo and head to the range with friends. I don't reload, so factory match ammo will be the extent of what I run in it. I've searched and read and read and searched and have narrowed down my choice to the Rem. 700 or Savage 10. I know this topic is likely beat to death, but I joined this forum solely for advice from guys who know and use these rifles. I don't have thousands of dollars to spend on the best of everything. In fact, I'm selling a few unused guns to fund my new interest.
I'm currently leaning toward the 700 SPS Tactical. I've only given the 700 a lead because of the aftermarket parts availability, especially used stuff. I'd prefer new stuff, but if I can save a few bucks by purchasing someone's gently used items, I'm all for it.
Can you guys shed some light on pros/cons of each rifle that I may not easily find with Google? I don't see myself reaching out beyond 500-600 yards, simply because there aren't any ranges in the Pittsburgh area that I know of that extend beyond that. It's my understanding that with the 20" barrel of the SPS I'll lose velocity, but shouldn't need it at those ranges anyway. If that's inaccurate, I'd like to know. If so, I can then look at the Varmint which has a 26" heavy barrel.
Sorry for the long post, especially since you guys are probably sick to death of the topic. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
