I had the opportunity to go to Kaufman, TX and train with Captain Kick-Ass of North Texas Rifle Precision at his private range. The range is a great shooting area that offers a 360 degree berm that is about 15’ tall and is close to 800 yards long. He setup about 20 steel targets in the basin ranging from lollipops, to hostage flappers, reactive targets, know your limits and several more. The MSTOMP was placed on one side of the berm and we used it to engage targets from 200 yards out to 750 yards. I took the Steel on Target course.

Since this was my second time to train with him he spent a couple of minutes analyzing my trigger finger angle making sure that I had a good 90 degree angle in it and that I was straight behind the rifle. This was beneficial to get confirmation that my shooting position was correct. We then progressed quickly and thoroughly through various topics including milling targets, analyzing the mirage and attempting to make wind calls based off of the data. I say attempting since I have a very hard time seeing and reading the mirage. That is one of many items that I took away from the course that I will continue training to become more proficient doing.

The great thing about training with CKA on a one-to-one basis is his ability to tailor the class to meet your needs. For me that included a significant portion of the class devoted to positional shooting. He spent a lot of time working with me on my position, getting my sling adjusted correctly and showing me tips on body positioning. We started off with the sitting position, progressing to kneeling and finally standing. The information that Jay poured into me during this time was outstanding. He didn’t just teach, he also brought out his AR-10 and proceeded to nail the target 9 out of 10 times while in the seated position. Watching him gave me the confidence that I needed to persevere and continue until I was consistently hitting the target.

After the positional shooting, he setup a mock match stage for me to practice safely transitioning to different positions while applying the pressure of the shot timer and focusing on accuracy in very awkward positions. This was a great addition to the session as he was able to comment on little things that drastically increased my success in subsequent runs.

Finally, we concluded the day with his trade mark golf ball shot. I love challenges and let me tell you, taking on a golf ball at 750 yards with a 308 is definitely a big challenge. After burning up “several” rounds, I finally hit the ball. That was a huge confidence boost for me and it was a great way to end the class.

I would highly recommend any of Jay’s classes. His instruction is tailored to meet your needs in a one-on-one session and the wealth of information and effort that he pours into it is amazing. Thanks CKA, I thoroughly enjoyed the class and look forward to the next one.

Re: North Texas Rifle Precision Steel on Target Review

To follow up with blklabs, Jay had a range day with 6 of us on Saturday following Blklabs training. We all had a great time. We had the same target set up as mentioned before from 300 to 760 yards. The range is set up well and the MSTOMP allows you to get up over the mirage when the day heats up. Jay hooked us all up with lunch and I think we all enjoyed the landowners hospitality as well. Anyone wanting a practice day with friends, I recommend you call NTRP and set up a range day with Jay. He is set up to provide most anything you could need from training, targets for sale, quarters to sleep and food to eat. Best money spent to practice and get good training for long distance shooting. Good luck at Rifles Only Blklabs.

CKA, you just keep this training in Texas, I have a hard enough time placing well in the local shoots without someone teaching them how to shoot!!

Looks like a fun time and who doesn't want their own range monkey!! I'm jealous!!

Re: North Texas Rifle Precision Steel on Target Review

Saturday was a lot of fun. I would suggest to everyone to go out and do a range day with CKA. I met a great bunch of guys and we had a blast. Also, I did the golf ball shot. I didn't think it was going to be as hard as it is to hit a golf ball at that range. I went through 37 rounds of 175 gr SMKs and 13 rounds of 155 palma before I hit it. Consequently, I am getting together with CKA this weekend for his loading class and then shooting the loads. I hope to have another chance to shoot at a golf ball again, hopefully do better then the first time I tried it.

For the day of shooting CKA had everything set up and ready to go with a good amount of reactive targets. The reactive targets are a blast to shoot at too. He had lunch and drinks for us. Even though this wasn't one of CKA classes and just a range day he had helpful tips to make the day of shooting even better. I can't wait to do another range day.

Once again if you have the opportunity to go shoot with CKA, either a range day or taking his one of his classes you should jump on it.

oh yeah sorry - I have a strict "No Sumpter Steve" policy. The gate guards have your picture and license plate info. Orders issued to karate chop on sight. Beware.

Re: North Texas Rifle Precision Steel on Target Review

here are some pics from the range day, still working on Jaimie's video. It is hard as hell to edit out all of Dallas12's shitty spotting on the video.

Shitty spotting!!

Jamie was shooting flies off that ball he was so close to it, plus I'm spotting a golf ball with a 10x at 750yrd.

So cut me some slack

Re: North Texas Rifle Precision Steel on Target Review

Can't we all just get along? LOL. See you guys in November.

Do I need to bring my 60x Swarovski Spotter?

Re: North Texas Rifle Precision Steel on Target Review

lol, at the end of the day every one was packed up and about to head home. My dad and nephew was out there watching. Daniel had never heard of Tannerite:

Re: North Texas Rifle Precision Steel on Target Review

wow! looking at all of ya'lls rifles cost more than i make year LOL one of these days when i get a rifle worth showing off i would like to get some lessons

Re: North Texas Rifle Precision Steel on Target Review

Jolly a lot of guys have stock rifles, rem 700s that they take out there. I would say take the class, apply what you learn and then start saving for a custom rig. A custom rig won't make you a better shooter, it just masks more of your mistakes. Learning how to drive the rifle correctly will make you a better shooter and Jay does a great job of teaching that!

Re: North Texas Rifle Precision Steel on Target Review

I have had clients show up with factory varmint rifles and 10X Super Snipers that shot very well in the class. Don't let the hardware pics scare you off, man.

Re: North Texas Rifle Precision Steel on Target Review

Jollyrancher, I took the NTRP class with a factory Rem Model 700 .308 with an IOR Scope (nothing to write home about, right?) and left feeling like I had Surgeon "Scalpel." Now when I get behind a custom built nail driver or a Walmart .22lr I am confident where I will hit before ever squeezing the trigger (thanks, CKA) It isn't the shootin' iron that makes the big difference, it's the shooter. Remember, our Marksmen went through Vietnam using off the shelf rifles and did AMAZING things. I bet if you went to the range with CKA, a Soda Straw, and Spit Wads, he'd have you leaving a better shot. Just give North Texas Rifle Precision a call and see what he has to say. You will not regret a second or penny.
