A Roanoke, Va., man and his wife were recovering after he accidentally shot himself and her during a firearms safety class.

The Bedford County Sheriff's Office tells media outlets that Michael L. Deel shot himself in the hand with a .45-caliber handgun. The bullet also struck his wife, Michelle, in the leg as she was sitting beside him.

The incident occurred Saturday during a firearms safety class at a residence. The instructor, Thomas Starke, told police he'd left the room and then heard a shot.

The Deels were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Michael Deel says the shooting was a "stupid accident."

This is why for training >>I << personally clear the weapon and ammunition is not even in the same room. I train people on SNAP CAPS untill they cannot get it wrong. Live ammo is only for the range.
The range doesnt even come into play until they can feild strip, recite the parts, and the rules.
If 1 rule is broken, example: the barrel pointed in a unsafe direction. Then we go back to square 1.

Not "welcome to gun safety 101, oh you brought your gun locked and loaded? Thats fine, you can go ahead and play with it and try to figure out how to clear it while I step out and make some copies...m'kay"...

Most safety classes have strict regulations about live ammo not being permitted in certain areas, like classrooms for example. If that be the case, this couple should be expelled from the class, no refund. If that is not the caee, perhaps some safety classes of their own. It wouldnt shock me to see the couple try to sue either, especially these days.

Still the trainer should have checked each firearm and magazine. You wouldnt believe how many times ive stressed NO LIVE AMMO, NO AMMO PERIOD. and a student hands me a "EMPTY FIREARM" and guess what... I put it in the clearing barrel and its either got a full magazine, 1 in the chamber, or both.

The only excuses id validate is either : the class had nothing to do with firearms, no weapons were permitted, or if the "victim" (idiot) had snuck in ammo (hidden magazine in his pocket).
