BUSTED......I am embarassed to admit that I have been shooting the 100 comps with a rear bag. Your post encoraged me to re read the rules for all comps. Not sure why i thought we could shoot 100/200 yards suported. My bad. After reading this I shot several 100yrd targets this week unsuported and actually scored a few points higher than Ive been shooting supported recently.

It seems that I was able to ride the stock and follow through after the shot better than when supported. This is exactly the oposite of what I expected.
I 've also noted when working on prone position at 50/100 yards that it is quicker for me to get back to a natural POA when shooting with a sling vrs bipod.

I appologize for being an airhead and speed reading the rules!

I don't think I'd worry to much about it, haptoshoot. What's done is done and these matches are really for sharing our personal experience at the Range with the results we get. You're aware now of the no "rear bag" rule, so we're moving on.

Also, you mention;

I have found this very same thing out, whether shooting the 25, 50, or 100 yards. That is why I now only use my bi-pod when shooting off the bench out to 200 yards. This month's 100 yard scores from yesterday may not bare this out from last month's score, but I'm a lot more comfortable with just the sling at 100 yards.

This is my second time shooting the 17HMR at 200. I pulled the trigger about 500 times this weekend between testing ammo, competitions, and this. I finally discovered that the 17HMR ammo that I bought 3 bricks of doesn't work in my gun. I shot two 5X5's @ 100 using two different lots of 17HMR and they both averaged about .75 MOA. I shot several 5-shot groups with my current 17 ammo and none of them were sub-MOA. It's the ammo, stupid!

Anyway, I am jazzed about these findings. I am still in search of a clean 200 yard target. I was very very close this month. I think it is achievable with my 17. With my 22, maybe not.

In other news, I shot a lot of RWS R50 that shot better than any ammo I have ever tested. I have been concerned because I am running out of my "killer" ammo. You all know I am the biggest Eley fanboy in the world, so it is pretty earth shattering for me to switch to RWS. How does it shoot without the dimple??? Well this stuff did!

I hope my bedding problem is finally sorted out, all four 9s were low, this is the best score I have ever shot in this match with this rifle.
Was pretty chilly at the range today around ten above but there was just about 0 wind, 3 inches of fresh powder snow, and hazy sunshine

^ Nice! Yeah when I was back in upstate NY I used to love shooting in the fresh snow too. The air seems to always be perfectly still.

That's great news. What I have had to do in the past is aim a little high even as all of my shots were impacting high to minimize the impact of 6 o'clock fliers that were prevalent in the lot of ammo that I was using at the time. I cheated myself out of X's, but saved myself from a few 9's.

Nice shooting guys. Like an idiot I screwed myself out of the competitions this month. WI's gun deer season is on till the 28th, making possessing a loaded rimfire illegal. On top of it all, the hunting has been lousy too. Rain and wind, the deer aren't moving. Only two taken off the farm in three days.

As to be expected with the holidays, hunting seasons, and weather, participation was down this month, and probably will be for December.

Hopefully next month, Santa will leave an extra something special "Hiding" in all of our Sniper's stockings. It's hard to believe that next month is also the last month of 2010.

We'll all be waiting to see what ol' St. Nick put under the tree, or what gifts of Hanukkah that we'll use next year, as I'm sure we were all good boys and girls in 2010.
