NRL .22 Gear Questions and Recommendations

I've been reading the rules for this and following the COFs for the last couple of months. The two pieces of gear that are mentioned are a bag not bigger than a soccer ball and a sling. I don't know how they figure what is the "size" of a soccer ball. If it is diameter, about 8.65 inches, than the gamechanger has one dimension that exceeds that and I haven't found dimensions for the tactical udder. The first question I have is the bag specific to the stage or for the entire match. Can I use a Protektor bag for prone and a different bag on a different stage? Either way, what have you found to be the best and most versatile bag that meets the restrictions and where is the best place to purchase.

I have pretty much the same questions regarding a sling. What do you find is easy to get into? What gives the greatest support? Where do you buy it?

So there it is. I will make my decisions based on your input and then get to work with your recommendations.

The Gamechanger is considered to be under volleyball size and is a bag commonly used. I use the Gamechanger on most NRL22 barricades. It is a pretty heavy bag too. Yes, you can switch bags between stages. The bag I end up using the most all-around is the Armageddon Gear medium size Fat Bag.

Everyone is different on slings. I just bought a SAP Positional Rifle Sling that gets great reviews... if you learn to use it correctly:

My suggestion is that you go to the next local NRL22 match and see what everyone there is using. I'll bet they'll let you try out the different bags they have on-hand. All the shooters at the local match are extremely helpful and are willing to let you try out any gear they own.

The Wiebad Pump Pillow also is a good size/shape/weight to use. I alternate using that and a mini-Fortune Cookie.

I use the Wiebad mini fortune cookie and a plain old hasty sling. The bad is used front and rear where needed and the sling is what I'm used to. Like billmeek said, just go, bring what you have, borrow and look at what is being run. It is a fun time and a fun group!

I like the Warhorse Development Commanche a good bit, but the mini fortune cookie is good as well for most barricades/ladders etc.

I've got a Sand Sock Gear set I use to fill in the gaps.

You can use a different bag per stage but only one given bag during a stage. So if the stage has multi positions you can't change bags per position. You have to make due with the bag you choose for that stage at the start.

As far as slings go - a magpul can be used as a positional loop sling that is fast to get in and out off if you stare at it for a minute. I have used GI webb, 1903 and NRA match slings for decades- none are as convenient to get in and out of position with. At half the price of the fancy brands it is easier to outfit more of your rifles with the same sling.....

One big advantage of the Magpul over a GI webb or 1903 is that you dont have to unhook the sling from the ass end of the rifle before slinging up....

The 5lb Pint Sized game changer is a great choice for a bag, I have both the game changer and pint sized and really only use the pint size now. SAP’s sling is very nice as well. 90 bucks but worth the money.,

You can do everything you need in nrl22 (and most centerfire matches as well) with a gamechanger/fortune cookie type bag and a Rifles only sling. I have 3 nrl22 wins and I can’t remember anytime I needed more than those. And I’m pretty new to rifle Competition

Don’t overthink it. Been there, done that.

Perhaps I am not looking in the right place.
Do slings count as support? Are slings legal for all positions?

Unless stated otherwise, slings can be used at anytime.

That pretty much goes for any prs style match. Bipod and Sling are typically considered “part of the gun.”

So, typically, a stage description would have to specify not being able to use either of those two items.

I have a tactical udder and really like it. That said I think the GC has an advantage over my bag in some situations. Some times my bag is a little too wide and I need something more compact. I think I’m going to pick up a mini fortune cookie or a pint sized game changer. Another bag I find I use a lot is a pump pillow. On some barricades if given the choice between my TU and a pump pillow I would pick the pump pillow every time. I use it to fill the space between my arm and leg to give me more stability. There are times where I just use it and the barricade stop on my rifle. Mostly on tie breaker stages where time is an issue. My tactical udder is not really suited to attaching to the rifle and moving it wastes a lot of time for very little additional stability. If you do pick up a pump pillow and want to save a few bucks you can do what I did. I bought a Wiebad modular pump pillow with no fill. I just shoved it full of old Beane Babbies and was good. As a bonus you can pull one out to comfort yourself after you really screw up a stage. If you do get some kind of pump pillow be sure to get a lanyard or sling so you can wear it around your body and don’t have to hold it. That will save you a ton of time when moving.

What you will find when you get to a match is most of the shooters are very nice and happy to let you try out their gear. My advidve would be to show up at the match and try out some other guys gear and see what you like. One bag you will want to have is a rear bag. For a long time I just used a sock full of rice and still do sometimes. About the best value I have found for the rear bags though are the ones midway sells that are their house brand. You can usually catch them on sale and get a small and large bag for under $30.

I use my 5700 elite. But I also shoot a lot of centerfire.

If you’re just shooting nrl22, StrelokPro is fine.

Strelok pro. User interface isn't the easiest but I have found it to be the most accurate app.

I'm using GeoBallistics / Ballistics Arc. I love the competition / range cards so I can have all the distances shown on a card, and all my rifle profiles / ammo profiles stored as well. Quick switching of rifle dopes for all of my friends and they can write down their dope before a stage.

I then bought the $85 weather meter to do all the wind/weather stuff. It bluetooth LE the info. Works pretty well, though I think BLE signals are getting wonky when I was trying to do samples in between a bunch of people running Kestrels and Rangefinders...

For NRL22, it was pretty easy just to remember. For local PRS stuff where you're shooting 4 targets at random ranges, I wrote it on a dope card attached to the wrist.
