Agree with most posts here. Thermal is unbeatable for detection, because you can see animals when they are partially obscured by cover, and I^2 cannot do that nearly as well. In fact, if you are using IR illumination concomitantly, then reflection of that light makes it even harder to detect animals at even close ranges.
I have the M24 and while the 24 deg FOV makes it a little less large screen view, the detection capability is much better than my TAM-14 weapon sight was. The compactness and ability to helmet mount it, makes for a fantastic complimentary system along with a good D-740 or 760.
If you are going to detect with thermal and shoot with I^2, then you can verify + ID with the I^2 before you shoot and assure that you always have the right shoot versus no shoot.
Also, if you are really thinking about using both, look up the "HELGA." Works great for me.
