NY or neighboring competitions?

i have looked just about everywhere i can think of, and can not find any type of long range competition for a scoped rifle in my area. hell ill drive a couple hours no problem, but i can't find any candidates!

please advise..........

there are a few that i know of in CT and NJ.schedules have not been posted yet. try and better define the type of competition you want to get involved in or the skills you are trying to develop.

post on the SHOOTER MEETUP for your state and connect with local shooters. they can provide better info.

since your in upstate NY, check out the Forbes range in Albany.

it's a 1000yd range and they hold a couple of F/Class and Palma matches a year.

penumbra,

the perfect scenario would be a comp similar to "sniper" style competitions. in other words, engaging different targets at different ranges without sighters.

I'm trying to develop skills for first round hits on moa targets. i practice on my own land all the time, but being in competition with like minded folk would be nice. some of my friends like to shoot, but none of them have tweeked their rifles and practiced as hard as i do.

OIF,

since you have the land, why not organize your own competition. get together with friends who share your interest and compete.

the only competition i know of in that format are LEO (closed to civilians).

i share your interest but the only competitions i know of are KD (and do not require stalking ).

Reade Range in PA has a Sniper Challenge match twice each year (April and November). Limited UKD, but there are mover stages and the COF will challenge both your shooting ability and PT.

Also JamieD of Wolf Precision puts on a couple LR clinics in PA each year which is a helluva way to improve your skills and get to know come like-minded shooters.

There is nothing in NJ that even resembles the type of match described--although the Marine Corps League Hatchcock match in October at Cherry Ridge range is a good time with GREAT people.

In Odessa NY, Schuyler County nearby to Watkins Glen, our Community Conservation Club does some fairly popular informal F Class-like matches at 200yd, twice a month when the weather is a tad more agreeable. Keep an eye out for 'Odessa FV200' announcements on this forum.

While 200yd may not appear like much, this format has proved to more than adequately challenging, and we have a varied and loyal group of competitors.

Many do something quite similar at the Springwater Range, as well.

Whereabout might you be coming in from? There may even be some folks with whom you might carpool.

i have looked at odessa, a bit far for me for 200 yards but as you say it would be challenging anyway. i think i will add that to my list.

other challenges seem cool, i will def. check these out once i get home.



++++i would love to hold an organized match here, but the word "liability" stops me every time. biggest i have had is 8 guys, and i knew none of them would sure me+++++ sad world

Just don't try to help out or you will be called names and told to shut the fuck up or don't come back even when asked for input.

The Carlos match is fun and a good place for the northeast Hide members to meet. I try to make it when I can but this past year we were in Cancuun. I plan to make it this year.

I have just emailed back and forth with freddy wissing. seems like a good dude, and i am def going to their practical and precision match Feb 20th. its a five hour drive,. but sounds like fun. 600 yards, movers, pop ups, steel, paper. Thanks for the lead!

Army, Freddy is a good guy and he is here on the Hide as well. I'd make the Feb match but will be in AZ at a match out there. They have one planned for June which i am planning to make.

Here's some (youtube) idea of what's involved.

While I am no longer up for the journey (health issues), the Carlos was my one annual annual shooting pilgrimage. I have a lot of friends on that line each Autumn.

The event is run annually by the Department of New Jersey, Marine Corps League; at the Cherry Ridge facility of ANJRPC (Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs). Events info and directions are avaialable at their web site.

Once snowmobile season is over, I really want to go to at least one tac match this summer. I'm signed up for the last weekend of training with JamieD (Wolf Precision). Might have another member here going, but certainly room in the truck if you are interested in carpooling.

I also shoot the Odessa matches. It's a great reality check on how well you and your gear are doing. It's a great bunch of guys there if you can make it down to a match.

Let me know what you think of the BHTC match. It looks like they have some on their calendar for later in the year. That's not too far away, and might be a good place to get my feet wet.

hey freddy and boys! i will definitely let you guys know how the match goes. wish i could be getting into this months, but too much work.

carpooling sounds like a good idea. anything to cut down on a match cost would be good when even my reloads cost 52 cents a pop. sometimes it is not a good thing to have your own range at home........thanks for the offer! lets hook up when it gets closer

As far as Carlos simulation is concerned, I made up some very close practice targets for 200 & 250yd, which I often employed as prep in the weeks leading up to the Carlos.

Maybe we could do something like that at Odessa.

There is also a 'Snowflake' multi-perp/hostage scenario target that's very challenging for 100yd-C/F and 50yd-R/F. We used to run matches on that, and even teamed up adult/youth teams firing adult-C/F and youth R/F simultaneously.

That sounds cool Greg! When i do small shoots at my farm, i use eight inch plates, one red and one white. I put the red one about 6 inches behind the white, with the white covering all but two inches of the red plate. white is hostage, red is perp. Very challenging

We shoot it at 300 hundred yards, a miss is -5 points, hit on perp is +15, and a hit on hostage is -15. Many scores have fallen to this stage, and some have even commented they should just miss the whole set up on purpose, but then i remind them i will disqual if they do not attempt a stage, lol.

my dads 300 RUM always has the advantage on this target, cause it seems like every time we shoot it there is 15-30 mph wind..........and now he has a USO on order.....
I got to stop teaching him stuff if i ever expect to win!

The statement accurately describes the spirit that Scotty has successfully cultivated over the past few years as an integral part of the FV200 experience. I believe it is the key feature that sets our events apart and keeps the pool of regulars growing. I've seen similar elsewhere, but seldom on as regular a basis.
