OCW iterpretation help where to go from here

Well guys I have been trying to find the right load for my Remington 700 SPSS .308 without much luck. So today I tried Dan Newberrys OCW test and need some help as to where to go from here.

first set of .75'' dots were shot with 175gr SMK's in Lapua brass and IMR 4064 loaded to 2.801 aol Winchester primers

Second set of dots were shot with same specs as the first just IMR4895 instead.

Third set of dots are the same specs as the others just with Varget instead.


Any help on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated. I cant seem to get this gun to shoot and I am hoping its that I havent found the load it likes yet. I have no problem shooting sub moa and .5moa with my gas gun AR10 with a 7# trigger so I hope its not me Thanks everyone

yes its a .308 I did it with the Varget should I clean it and do it again ive been using Varget exclusively to no avail that's why I was trying the 2 different IMR powders the gun will shoot sub moa 5 shot groups all day long with FGM maybe its my reloading?

Oh...my bad...misunderstood the layout of your first post.

I see a couple if decent groups on there...on the lighter side 43.1...or 44.3...change the seating depth, most Remingtons will hold and feed 2.820"...work your way out and see what happens.

You won't be anywhere near the lands even at 2.820"...not if its a factory barrel...so don't worry about that.

And it may be your loading technique...are you crimping, how are you sizing, how are you seating bullets, etc?

You started with 4064 just over where a good node would be, at 41.9 or 42.0 grains in Lapua brass.

It looks like as pressure increases, accuracy decreases... in a 700 action, that often means the bolt lugs need lapping. Check that, to see if one is bearing, and the other isn't. There are DIY processes for fixing that, but you'll need to research that...

It looks like accuracy is there at 42.5 with IMR 4895. The usual place for Winchester cased loads would be at 42.4... so it's odd to see this in Hornady brass, but there it seems to be.

Your target spots and groups are a bit too far apart for good analysis. If the target spots were not level, one to the next, that will skew your results some.

Your Varget node should be at 43.1 grains in Lapua brass, and the target does indicate this.

I think the accuracy issue might be barrel needs to break in... and/or bolt lugs could use a lapping... and the target spots would just be too hard to hold on ( to "lock onto" ) for a repeatable aiming point. Add a pinch of parallax to the mix, and you get POA drift.

Try 42.5 grains of 4895, 43.1 grains of Varget again, and test 42.0 grains of 4064.

One or more of those loads will be a winner, for sure.

Dan thats exactly what I was looking for. I will research the bolt lugs and check it out and reload with the loads you have recommended. I will do a better job of getting my dots level and a little closer together next time as well. I think you are right on the parallax adjustment, I am using a Sightron SIII and the parallax nob is really hard to turn and I feel like I just cant get it perfect maybe I can by a larger wheel for it that will help me to get it perfect.

Not sure on the vintage of the Hornady brass I bought it as once fired from a local distributor. but that may explain it

A lot of scopes are a little out of focus when you get the parallax set for the distance you are shooting...this includes many of the $500-$600 scopes.

Most aren't bad enough to be a problem though...don't use clarity to check for parallax, regardless of focus move your head side to side and set the knob where the crosshair stays still when you move...when you get there, if its too far out of focus to suit you...you're gonna need to repair/replace the scope.

I don't use parallax to focus sight picture I do exactly as you say the knob is just so hard to turn its hard to get it perfect. if it was a $600 dollar scope I wouldn't be pissed if it was a little out of focus but I payed more than double that for it, not that it isn't in focus because it is. I think I need to break in the adjustment knob
