I picked up a .408 a while ago and it has a really strange barrel on it. I am wondering what the purpose of that bulge is. It's hard to tell in the pictures but it is about 10 inches from the muzzle. My rifle is an early Windrunner but I also have seen it on some CheyTacs. I was wondering if it was some early experimental concept or something that helped accuracy shooting ELR.

Hi,

It looks like one of the early versions of the suppressor "bumps". The original suppressors used by EDM/Cheytac (When they were working together) were OPSINC over the barrel suppressors. But I could be mistaken in regards to your actual barrel....

This image below shows where the suppressor would "stop".

Ah that makes sense. That was my first thought but I doubted it since the can the seller was selling along side my rifle went on the muzzle rather than go over the barrel. I should have known it looked familiar though because I own a Mk12 with a Ops Inc collar. I'm going to just take a wild guess and say .408 OPSINC cans are unobtanium nowadays. It would be neat to track one down though.

Speaking of tracking parts down, you and I were messaging about parts for this very gun a few months back. I know you have been busy starting a gun company, congrats by the way everything's looking great! That is a dream of mine to do someday as well. But I just wanted to remind you I'm still interested in the parts in the case you forget or did not see the PM I sent you. Anyways thanks for answering my question, been pondering over this for a few years.

Hi,

Try calling Allen Engineering and see if he will make you a copy of that OPSINC reflex suppressor.
IF my memory serves me correctly he ran OPSINC and then went out on his own.
Being the design was his (IF my memory serves me correctly) he more than likely can make you a clone.

In regards to other parts/PM.....I will make time to get it to you!!

Sincerely,
Theis

I just ordered an AE brake for my Mk12, so I'll have to give them a holler to see what they charge for a suppressor. Part of the reason I doubted it was for a suppressor was just how far back it is and how thick the barrel is. I guess I am just underestimating how big a can for a .408 is! Had the camera out today so I just snapped a fun little pic of Mk12 and .408. As I now know, both contoured for Ops Inc. suppressors. And no worries about the parts THEIS, I know you're super busy. I can be patient, guns not going anywhere.
