Odd question, $5 gold coin value

I guess this is my lucky day.
I found this today in a box of old stuff in an apartment I'm cleaning out.

What is it actually worth?
I've googled the description and gotten a wide range of prices.

Gold melt value at $1675 "Spot" price would be $405. However, this coin appears to be in About Uncirculated (AU) condition, which will increase its value to collectors. It appears to be 1908(?), with "S" mintmarks bringing a premium due to mintages.

The two largest grading firms are PCGS and NGC, though I personally believe PCGS to be slightly more discriminate. You don't have to have it professionally graded, but there is a level of comfort in knowing that it is "geniune" and enclosed in tamperproof holder.

As mentioned above, if you must handle it, please wear cotton gloves to keep fingerprints and oils off of the surfaces.

It'a a beaut - the Indians are very neat coins. The Quarter Eagle ($2.50) and Half Eagle ($5) gold Indians are the only US coins minted using "sunken-relief" technique.

It's actually a 1909 D or maybe but not likely an O minted coin.

1909 - it was hard to tell. No premium except for "O" mintmark, which would make it worth ~$10k+ in AU. "Red Book" has a note - beware spurious "O" mintmark.

If you think that's an "O", it would behoove you to have it certified as geniune and graded by NGC/PCGS....

Here's a king ignernt question for ya'll--why shouldn't he touch it with bare hands? I've got some gold jewelry laying around, and it doesn't show any ill effects from handling. Can oils/body acids actually 'stain' fingerprints into gold?

Touching it will leave fingerprints, to get them off you need to wipe them, in doing so you cause small scratch marks that take away alot of vakue. NEVER dip a coin into any kind of cleaner, it also takes away the value.

Like the previous poster said, you can look at pcgs.com for a general value. You can take it to a reputable coin dealer and they can tell you it's grade and give you a little better idea what it's worth.

The older "pre 33" gold typically has a higher buy/sell spread vs bullion coins so if you are thinking about selling ask around because some shops will try to low ball you.

I have a bunch that look just like that.....but they have chocolate inside. In the 80's my twin brother had a bunch of 'gold coins'......but come to find out the drug store screwed him cause they had something made from latex inside. Stretch like hell though!!!

Gold is gold no matter what form it is in, But in a coin like you have and in good to very good condition it may be worth more then gold at the market price. thats why i said do not touch it with your naked hands, use cotton gloves or a cotton sock and never try to clean it in any way. there are people who do this for a living. Look at www.coasttocoastcoins.com to get another idea what it is worth. I have one gold coin i paid $804 in 2006 today with the market down it is going for between $2000 to $2100 un touched, if i put my fingers on it the price falls alot and it is even worse to touch old silver coins. MM

MM PS NGCS is the best place to have a coin graded they do not put a $ value on it but a grade that is respected world wide and they will put the coin in a plastic tamper proof holder. I only buy NGC GRADED COINS BECAUSE OF ALL THE FAKES GOING AROUND. it's like an insurance policy.
