Just wondering if anyone knows why rifles are illegal for use in Ohio for deer hunting? They are allowed for everything else and just wondered why not for deer? I asked our local Game Warden and he looked at me shrugged and said thats the way its always been.

Re: Ohio Laws?

I have lived in Ohio all my life and hunt, I also do not have a clue. You would think that if you asked somebody like that they would have been able to give you an answer better than what was givin.

Re: Ohio Laws?

Northern Ohio is flat.
They say there are far too many people to shoot high powered rifles in Ohio without danger to the residents.
By the way, have you been in a state park on the first day of deer season?
Sure is alott of people in the woods.
My first opening day in Zaleski state forest I got to my spot about 4:30AM and waited for the sun to come up. About 30 mins. before sunrise I saw 3 deer in a creek bed below me but wasn't sure of my shot because it was so dark, so I thought that I should wait.
At that moment I heard a shot and felt the slug hit the tree that I was leaning againest.
I go to PA. to high power hunt.

Re: Ohio Laws?

I have lived in Ohio most of my life. I'm my opinion Ohio should be a county to county decision like Wisconsin where I have also lived. I live in Montgomery county now and under no circumstance should hunters be allowed to use high power rifles here. However I spend a week in south eastern Ohio every year in Morgan county and there is not a damn reason that rifle hunting should not be allowed there. It has low population and offers the perfect terrain for safe shooting. Not sure why Ohio doesn't go to the county by county regulation. Sure wish they would! Those LeverEvolutions sure do shoot well in my 30-30 and I would pick that over my Mossberg any day of the week and feel completely safe about it!!! I guess the abundance of assbag hunters that do not practice safe and ethical hunting are to blame from what I have heard. It is odd that almost any other game can be taken with a rifle though!

Agreed just dont understand why I can pick yotes and groundhogs off with hp rifles but Im not allowed to use it for deer.... Well I guess it gives me 1 more reason to own another gun aka Rem 700Muzzleloader

Re: Ohio Laws?

I think it is the fact that some many "average joes" hunt deer that are not educated properly in firearms safety. I see far more dangerous people go after deer then any other animal.

I'd use caution breaking that rifle out in the field during deer season, no matter if it is all with good intentions.

Could be wrong but I have heard you can only hunt yotes or other game with a weapon that is legal to take deer during all deer firearm seasons. Don't have the regulations in front of me, but I will check.

Michigan has a similar "shotgun/muzzle loader/handgun" zone for deer, but one can use a centerfire rifle for predator & varmint hunting.

It has to do not only with more dwellings in that zone, but the fact that there are a lot more deer hunters out and about than there are predator/varmint hunters....

Outdated thinking in my opinion, but several states have similar laws...
