i see all the time in magazines and listed online do it yourself posts that with a parkerized gun you should oil them often my question is what kind of oil is being refered to is it just regular old rem-oil or something more special.

Oil, period. In 'Nam we used motor oil...; all we had available. Park's main purpose is to provide a sorta porous wick that allows the oil film to persist.

always used CLP because that is what was available.
for the OUTSIDE of the rifle you can use anything that provides a barrier against moisture. You could probably slap bacon fat on it and be fine.
