Went out this weekend with a bud I work with ( McLovin ), our goal was to scout for cats - Bob Cats & Mountain Lions and do some calling.
We have this Canyon that seems to have it all, a mixture of dense and open cover, water, and plenty of Deer. On this morning scouting trip we counted over 20+ deer in the canyon!
Well on our way into the canyon we made a few call stands and did not call anything in - except for one huge Bard Owl, he just flew in and was checking out our decoy bunny.
After about 6 hours of trekking up and down canyon walls, river wash-outs, high rock out-croppings, and tangles of brush, we decided to call it a day. It’s 11:30 and we are maybe 200 yards from the trucks, when out of the corner of my eye I spotted movement up in the rocks and bushes about 60 yards strait up.
I tell McLovin hey I see something, as he looks up the sun was cresting over the canyon wall and everything was a complete white out. McLovin is the crack shot between the two of us – that’s another story…
Ok, it’s on – I pull my rifle up and can’t see anything, scope cap covers are down, I pop them both open, pull up again find the coyote in the scope, pull the trigger and nothing. Some how when I opened the scope cap covers I accidentally opened my bolt, so I close the bolt find the coyote for the third time and connect – and all you could hear was a big thump! Now I have this huge ass grin on my face, I tell McLovin, you hear that, I got em!
The whole time McLovin still can’t see / spot the downed coyote and now the sun is really blazing down over the canyon wall.
As we were looking over our prize we had noticed that she had all kinds of battle scars, barb wire marks around her legs, ripped ears, muzzle scars and maybe one or two decent teeth left and the rest were worn down nubs.
To my surprise, the Hornady 55gr V-Max did some major damage, the entry wound looks to be about a three inch hole. Note to self, solid shoulder hit = major damage!
Rifle:
Remington 700
Cal - .223
Bbl 20”
AAC M4-2K
Nikon 6.5-20x44
Ammo Factory Hornady 55gr V-Max
Side note, the M4-2K can on a bolt gun is amazingly quiet as compared to an AR!
On to the pictures:
The old girl laying on the rocks, you can just see her back side and tail
Me with the old girl
Her teeth were all worn down to nubs for the most part
Hornady 55gr V-Max entry wound
