Old new member in Phoenix

Greetings Hide members,

I am a new member but I have been lurking and reading the practical marksmanship/stupid question forum for over a year now, reading that section from front to back. I joined awhile back in order to utilize the online training. I am not a big forum posting guy and my ears are much bigger than my mouth...so to speak. I have been involved with firearms and tactical training since the early 90's under the tutelage of Max Joseph and TFTT/DAG in California, to the tune of about 3000 hours of training; running the gamut from Level 1 pistol to Overseas Operator and Combat Fieldcraft courses where we operated in 8+ man teams. I have multiple long range rifle courses under my belt but am always looking for more and this site has it in spades. The wealth of knowledge here is impressive. I have been a martial arts instructor and involved in security work since the mid 80's, doing everything from bouncing punk rock stages to VIP protection in Beverly Hills and I am currently doing armed security here in Phoenix. I Just wanted to come out and say hey and maybe link up with some shooters here in the Phoenix area.

From their website, they apparently require an insurance policy of some kind to have access to the 1000 yard range. I'll try calling them to verify. Agreed about the heat. I have lots of desert experience from shooting, survival training and rock climbing but I'm past that kind of suffering anymore! Thanks for the response. I would be down to link up and send some rounds down range together when the weather changes.

They don't require the shooter to come with any insurance that you are speaking of. Not sure where you got that information. Desert Sharp shooters carries the insurance for the 1000 yard range and they have scheduled practices and club matches every week. Go to their website (https://www.desertsharpshooters.com/) and sign up for the their weekly email where they send out the schedule for the week. Very good people for sure! I will say that it's best if you show up to one of the practices with a buddy that can pull targets to indicate your impacts (in the pits) or have an e-target (https://autotrickler.com/products/shotmarker-one) to show you your impacts. I don't have an e-target but have been fortunate to be allowed to take turns shooting onto another shooters e-target. I'd like to get my own but the wait time to get one currently is 12-16 weeks which has kept me from ordering one. You won't be able to set up any steel on this range.

@Sstevens7 I have that fresh, out-of-the-box smell, with an unfired 20" .308 and a new, non-zeroed scope. I had an old M1A that I used to hit targets a couple hundred yards out, but that's the limit of my long-range shooting =O I have a lot to learn, which is why I chose .308 and read quite a bit (not the same as hands-on, I recognize).

I tried getting into shooting 2 decades ago, but had no friends that were also interested, so it fizzled. Thus, I would definitely enjoy meeting some new friends that share this same interest!

Yeah maybe not the best set up but it still can get it done. 20” barrel being pretty short, giving you slower velocities of course. It’s a fun process but I say I’d like to help ya when ready. Once we get the 100 yards dialed in and see what groups your rifle produces, anything further out is all possible, just need to understand the numbers assuming you have a good barrel and good ammo of course.

I've read that, but hearing you say it helps me feel like I didn't completely waste time/money =)

I hope to get good with the shorter .308 before moving on to, e.g., 24" 6.5 cm. I have about 6 or so different "match" ammo brands/lines to see how they fare.

Let me know the next time(s) you plan to hit the range and would like some company! cc @OldieBuddyGoodie

Hey Stevens thanks for the reply. Here is the link to BASF web page. You have to click "specialty ranges" to see the list. Unless I am reading it wrong, High Power and Desomme Ranges both require a user group agreement, which requires insurance; so a private individual has to join a club to access those ranges, was what I was saying. Not that I would not consider that...thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I would still like to find a dry river bed or something somewhere on BLM land that I could do my own thing without a "Daddy" watching over me.

You don’t have to be a member to shoot with desert sharp shooters. It’s $10 to shoot with them, $8 of which goes to Ben Avery and the remaining $2 covers their portion of the insurance. That’s all outlined once you click the link. I’d also like to find a 1000 yard piece of land to be able to shoot on my own time but for now this is all I got and again they are great people with a wealth of knowledge. Everyone keeps to their own shooting when shooting and no range officers there on that range. Everyone is expected to know firearm safety and be responsible.
