I know this is not long range.
However, I went old school on a buck this morning (10/29/09).
I have been taking my long range rifle as well as a short range rifle with me lately. The idea being that if I do any walking or spot a deer at under 400yds I planned to try my iron sighted 1903 in .30-06.
The rifle was born in the Rock Island Arsenal in 1919. It has proven that age means nothing in accuracy. It can shoot just under an inch at 100yds all day long.
As luck would have it today I spotted a deer from a dirt road. It was well within my criteria for a shooter buck and also a inaugural 1903 buck. I fired one shot and heard the bullet strike. I later lasered the range at 117yds. He piled up at 172yds.
The 165gr Nosler Accubond cut the artery just above the heart and struck one lung. Broke ribs going in and coming out.
Overall I was very happy with the rifle and bullets performance. I think that this will be my setup for walking and shorter range from now on.
Anybody else up for "Old School"?
Dave
