oly or cmmg

Re: oly or cmmg

Spikes Tactial, Smartgunner build with Daniel Defense parts, and Bravo Company build would be preferred.

Then CMMG... don't consider Oly(in my opinion)

Both are garbage, spoken from a former owner of both.

The following are the good AR15s:

Colt
Daniel Defense
BCM Bravo Company Machine
Noveske
LMT Lewis Machine Tool (skip the piston one)
KAC

CDNN will you a Colt 6520 for $899 and it is a proper milspec AR15, but has a carry handle.

Otherwise, check smartgunner.com and gunbroker.com for current deals.

Heed his advice. Check out that Colt, or buy the upper and lower separately and have a BCM upper'ed AR for about $900.

Re: oly or cmmg

razor,

They use inferior quality steel, parts which do not stay with the military spec dimensionally, and parts which are not pre-tested (as the customer, you test them...).

The result?

Some do not run right out of the box. Wong size gas port, misshapen gas key, etc. One even seized up on me after 3 or 4 shots. Could not get it open again.

Some run for a while and crap out. Broken bolt lug, pins
dropping out of lower due to dimensional problems, etc.

Some run but have crappy accuracy due to a substandard barrel.

You said that your budget is 800. How about waiting a little longer to spend just a bit more to get a true quality milspec gun?

I have had 4 CMMGs. Now I have none.
I have had 1 Oly. Now I have none.
I have had 2 Bushmasters. Now I have none.
I have had 2 Rock Rivers. Now I have none.

You get the idea.

Personally I like Daniel Defense and Colt, but the others named in my post above are also producing excellent quality battle rifles.

Your life may depend on the ability of this rifle to function. Spending 200 or 300 extra should be seen as inexpensive life insurance.

Re: oly or cmmg

If you have to stick to that budget, Spike's Tactical without reservation. I have built several ARs over the past few years and have gotten to know them quite well. I first started with pulling them apart and then, later, building them. The reason that I got to know ARs at first is because a Bushmaster and a Rock River were my first ARs. They didn't have big issues, but they had issues nonetheless.

Oly and CMMG fall into about the same category as RRA and Bushmaster, in my opinion.

Re: oly or cmmg

Well, if you just want a starter/blaster you'll probably be happy with any brand as long as it's functional. CMMG, RRA, Spikes, are the more affordable ones that I can think of that have been decent for me. If you really want a "mil spec" M4 then the closest for the money will probably be Daniel Defense. And as the other guy said you can get a (Canadian?) colt from CDNN for 900 - they are police trade ins so probably rode around in a car a lot and fired very little.

Personally I would figure about 1k and build something for yourself. If you want I can PM you a list of different places I've bought parts from.

Re: oly or cmmg

I wouldn't touch another Oly with a 10 foot pole!

Although I've never owned a CMMG, I've met the owners, and they seem like good people. They also support the shooting sports, which is a plus to me. This weekend, they are holding their 5th, Midwest, 3-gun championship.

Re: oly or cmmg

My first AR was an Olympic, PCR4 model. Still have it today with at least 4,000 rounds down it.
I have purchased several K16's for youth P Dog shooting and besides swapping there mags for Magpul, that is about all I have ever done to them.
I run there LTF 16" for a coyote rig and the only issue I have had with it was to replace the gas rings & re stake the gas key. Estimated 5,000 rounds and still shoots damn good.
I also have a K8 that has approx 2500 rounds that has been hot as hell shoot'n P dogs. Still shoots great, no repairs needed to date.

Maybe I have been lucky, but I don't see the issue with OLY. Out of the 30+ OLY rifles I have bought (most of them K16's) I really have no complaint. There may be one or two that the mag well seemed a touch snug, all upper to lowers fit well, and they all shot respectable.

Some of it's elitism, some of it is for genuine reasons. I helped build half a dozen lowers for friends & used oly parts kits because I got a screaming deal on them. Every kit was either missing something or had defective parts. Maybe I just had bad luck, maybe they just had a bad run but still...

Re: oly or cmmg

I own an Oly match upper, and a CMMG .300BLK barrel.

I dont know how great the build quality is of CMMG complete rifles, but the barrel I have from them is very nice. The coating does not scratch easily, and it shoots quite well. If the rest of what they make matches the barrel, I would buy a complete rifle from them.

I notice that Oly is a sore spot among several online posters. In total I own four stripped Oly lowers that were blems from about 20 years ago. I have one built up using and Oly lower parts kit and an Oly k16 upper. The company was good to me, and quickly answered my phone calls. I ordered about 6 years ago. The price for the complete upper came to about $500. I thought this was a fair price. It fit very tight in my upper, and I had to file a little bit from the rear lug to get the pin through. That isn't a bad thing though because this rifle is TIGHT.
I take it out shooting with my friends as they enjoy being able to shoot AR-15s, and so far in just under 600 rounds I have only had one malfunction. It was the first round that I had chambered through the upper and the bolt did not seat. I rode the charging handle closed. After hitting the forward assist, I have had no other problems with it. Accuracy is good in my opinion. My friends and I mostly shoot water bottles and prarie dog shoot and sees, but I dont have a problem hitting them out to 125yds with my eotech.
The times I have taken it to shoot groups it has done well in my opinion. I shoot 2-3" groups at 100 yards using the eotech on a low setting. I know its nothing like some of the others on this site, but i am happy with it.

Some of the internet hate for Oly comes from people saying that it wont hold up to extreme conditions like those seen in combat. My question is, do you plan to take this rifle into combat, or do you plan to plink with it out in the woods with your buddies, or throw a few mags downrange when you get the chance. If its just for fun, Oly or CMMG will treat you well. If you plan to take it to combat, please consider something in a belt fed or full auto variety.

I may be a little bias towards Oly, but that is because I have not had a problem with mine. I also own other higher end ARs including a Colt match HBAR. Yes the Colt does shoot better groups, but I would expect so for the money spent on it!

Re: oly or cmmg

Spend a little bit more and get bettter quality.. you really don't have to spend that much more in reality.. but of the two I'd go CMMG.. but again in reality I wouldn't get either.

Re: oly or cmmg

BCM, S&W, Stag, can all be purchased for $800 or less. I would stay away from Oly our local Pd bought 25 several years ago and all but 1 had multiple failures from day one. They returned them with a month and yes I was a witness to this. I was asked to look them over along with a armorer from the base. We both agreed it was the rifles and not the mags. I have owned a oly and didn't have any problems with it but I would not own another, unless it was a gift. I have built several rifles using CMMG lowers and all functioned fine. I really like the BCM stuff and the price is really good. You also might look at PSA.
