A while back I've been wanting to switch to 308 from 30-06, as the 30-06 is not a pleasure to shoot since it's only a little Remington 700 mountain rifle.

So I found a Remington 700 varmint 308 26" barreled action here on the hide and picked it up. Then I added a McMillan HTG stock with sniper fill. Once I put my Nikon Monarch 3-12x42SF on there I'm kinda thinking I'm going to be paying the price for my build. This thing is heavy. Not sure on exact weight yet, but once I get the numbers I'll post them.

Anyone else use a heavy ass rig for deer hunting?

Re: One heavy hunting rifle

I have used a Rem 700 SS mountain rifle for the last 19yrs. Have taken umpteen gillion deer with it and have never noticed it to kick when I'm shooting deer. They're not target rifles, they are hunting rifles and there is a huge difference. Oh yeah, mine is in 30-06 too.

Skinney and I both tote 16+ pound semi-autos to hunt everything from coyotes to elk.
Prepare yourself for it and it's a piece of cake.

If you are built anything like Skinny I'm sure you could tote a 50cal and be fine!

heavy rifles are a fun work out! i love it!

Re: One heavy hunting rifle

Always have carried heavy guns... and in less than flat places... no difference once you do it enough.

Then again, when my hunting buddies peak a ridge and say look at that deer over on the other ridge.. they can't hold lightys still to take the shot.

I just go Boom and pray it does not fall on the other side. (After said prayer on the shot placement)

lol, not even close to that. I'm about average I suppose. 6'1" 215 but getting soft. He's cut from the steel plates he throws around.

Carrying heavy rifles in the field puts hair on the peaches!

Like c_bass said, prepare for it and you won't have any problems.

Re: One heavy hunting rifle

Here in the Blue Ridge mountains it's a matter of what you're doing and what you need to do it.........

6 pounds all up......

I won't be doing much hunting this fall so I'll have to live vicariously through your pictures. Please post lots of them.

Re: One heavy hunting rifle

PGS-Is that a 5X6 or 6X6 elk???? Either way, a great looking animal. Nice pics.

I'm afraid to weigh my hunting rifle....they all have heavy barrels.

If your concentrating on the shot, while hunting, you don't usually notice the kick. If doing load work, fold up a towel and put it between you and the rifle...no use beating yourself up just for load work, and if you develop a flinch because of it, it just makes it worse...no worries.

Re: One heavy hunting rifle

Make 'em light:

Use aluminum rings.
Use two-piece aluminum base.
Brake the muzzle (very effective)
Install recoil reducer in the stock.
Install recoil reducing butt pad.
Mount your hunting barreled, rather than target, action in a hunting weight, rather than target, stock.
Use a strong web, rather than leather, sling.
Use a fixed 10x-16x optic.
Avoid a 3# scope. Use field glasses for what they're for. Glassing the field. Then acquire the target and commence firing.

Now then: if you want it heavier, buy lead tape or mag wheel weights and lay 'em on in cavities created under the barrel in the forearm or in the butt. Use this opportunity to balance the rig. Hang a 5# dumbbell off the muzzle. Since its yours you can as you please, right?
