One piece mount or B/O rings?

Just got an itch to get out an AR10T that's been collecting dust for years and see what it can do. As I am not a gas gun guy, was curious to know what mounting options serious gas gunners are using. The gun will be a sub 500 yard shooter with a MK IV mounted on it. (65moa of travel)
Got plenty of B/O ring sets available but was wondering if 1 piece is what everyone was using. Mounting and removal of the optic on teh fly is a variable not needed FYI...

    TIA,

A one piece mount is a better option for the AR platform. With standard rings, the front ring mounted at the forward end of the picatinny flattop is often times too far rearward for proper eye relief. I have used the Badger Ordnance AR riser (20MOA) and then used standard rings, or a one piece base, either way you are looking for around 1.100-1.400" scope height for proper positioning of optics.

The LaRue and NF one piece mounts seem to be popular on gas guns, but I have seen a lot of traditional ring setups used also. I use a NF unimount on my Pof and don't really need the 20 moa that's built in, but doesn't hurt either. The GG&G mounts also seem like a nice mount.

    RR,

I run Larue mounts on most of my AR's (5.56 and 7.62) because I switch between my day scopes and a dedicated NVS. I also shoot with irons regularly (that I can't use with the scopes mounted) so I remove the scopes for that purpose as well. Aside from those reasons, or ease of transport, or switching optics between different rifles...there is no real need for QD, 1pc mounts.

I wouldn't bother with the QD or one-piece mount in your case because it doesn't sound like you'll need it based on your intentions for the rifle and having more than enough internal adjustment in your Mk4 to easily get to 500yds with a 100yd zero. The Badger rings are solid and mount up very well to the AR-10T's upper (I have used them in the past to mount a NF to a 10T, but the objective was pretty far back on the rifle though). As long as you have a spare set that has enough height for the bell to clear the handguard...I say go for it and don't look back. Worst case scenario, if you think you need (or you want) more adjustment from your scope...get one of Badger's 22MOA AR risers that you can use with your Badger rings.

    Good luck!!

I like the KAC mount. I notice the USMC and Navy SEAL's, who are fairly serious gas gunners, use the Badger rings. Either is fine, if you can get the scope set in the proper position.

How much clearance do you have on the scope? I have the NF unimount on the POF with a Mk IV Leupy with 50 mm objective and it just barely clears the rail. Just wondering if I should switch to the AI to get a bit more clearance?

with a NF 50mm and the 3" sunshade and BC cap there is 1mm clearance.Whithout sunshade and cap 3mm.unimount is the 1.375

Re: One piece mount or B/O rings?

Obviously the upper receiver has less metal than the Rem 700, or maybe just my opinion. With that, I felt the one piece mount gives just a little more to the rigidity of the action/sight plane. Again, this is my feeling and opinion. With that, I am a KAC fan and like their one piece mounts but not a fan of the prices. I went with a stout LaRue mount and trying it this week. But I am looking at the SPUHR mount for AR's. Jeff

Re: One piece mount or B/O rings?

Had mine mounted with rings. Just wasn't comfortable to shoot. Changed to a GG&G one piece and what a difference. I've been shooting ARs for a long time, I am used to a certain cheek position and the one piece made that possible. Each person is different. Find what is comfortable for you.

Re: One piece mount or B/O rings?

Eye relief is the key, especially for prone shooting. Get an offset one-piece mount that allows the scope to go further forward. Both LaRue and NF make these, but I just got rid of my Larue because it was unreliable. The NF in Ultra-High is what I've been using: rock solid and foolproof.

Compared to the picture shown above, I have my scope mounted about 1" further forward: hence the need for offset one-piece base. Most people will be more comfortable with the rear of the scope forward of the charging handle. But it does depend on the scope and how much eye relief it needs.
