Gunsmithing Open R700 Bolt Face - 270 to 300 Win Mag

Dumb question but can you take a Remington 700 in 270 and open up the bolt face to accept 300 win mag? would it be better to just buy a 300 win mag bolt?

just curious as I am going to start working on a this build and didn't know if there was still enough meat there for it to be safe.

You can open it up, but you will have to change out the extractor as well. You will need to upgrade to the Sako or M16 style extractor because you will taking out the groove that the original extractor sat in. I open up the bolt face larger than necessary and then solder in a ring, then open that up to the correct diameter. Just looks nicer.

So I would be better suited going with buying a new bolt vs the expense of the gunsmith to open it up?

You are going to have it at a gunsmith for the new barrel anyway. Might as well have the bolt and action tuned up at the same time.

Sell the original bolt on eBay and you will get $150-200 for it.
Take that money and buy another bolt on eBay or buy a factory bolt from Pacific Tool. Kiff has magnum bolts from time to time for $135.
If your building a new tackdriver have your gunsmith order you up a new bolt from Pacific Tool with all of the bells and whistles on it.
They run $300 with everything.
