Opening up a recoil lug pocket for an oversized lug

R700 with a badger m40a3-a5 spec lug going into an HS precision stock. I need to open it up some and my local smith has once again gone skidzo and has disappeared (when he is full up in work he stops answering the phone).

I have a slide vise/drill press and a junked HS stock to practice on. I know open from the front of the recoil lug and what not, but I have some questions.

-Is there a bit preference for fiberglass?

-once the cut is made, do I paint over it or do I need to seal it with acraglass?

It’s for a clonish build (m24). Used a different recoil instead of the standard factory lug.

It really needs to be cut on a Bridge Port or a CNC machine to keep the recoil face perpendicular to the action. I would find another gun smith to cut it for you and bed the action to the stock.

On a side note, the M24 used the stock Remingtin recoil lug.

Just hog it out, for clearence. A hand grinder will work. Tape the side and front toward the muzzle, not the back toward the shooter.
Wax with Johnsons past wax as a release agent, a couple of coats.
Then use Brownells Accraglass to fill the lug area, add color if desired...or similar fiber glass epoxy.
Wax action bolts ahead of time and any area ya don't want the glass to stick to.
Fill the void with glass, install bolts lightly snug. Use q tips to clean up the excess accraglass that seeps out let set for a day.
Take out stock bolts, tap the barrel and wiggle barreled action back and forth, until they seperate. Clean up and take off side and front tape...you have a perfect fit for your recoil lug.
Seriously Easy...you can do it.
Next time use factory recoil lug...it's easier and does the job.

You open it up in front of the recoil lug. If you Machined the bearing surface behind the lug. The action would move backward in the stock and the action screws wouldnt line up anymore.

I went the 7 axis dremel route on mine . I tried not to touch behind the lug but I was bedding it with devcon anyway so I wasn't too worried. I shot it before bedding just to see and it was like 3 moa even though it didn't seem to fit sloppy. Bedding fixed it.

If you have any imperial sizing wax for reloading, it makes an excellent release agent for bedding.

100 Percent wrong .

OP....the material is soft in front of the lug recess. A dremel will do just fine . A chisel will is fine if you use common sense, it will all be bedded .
