The front of the upper ; where it mates up with the barrel extension.

Re: Opinions on lapping upper receiver

Needs to be checked, and trued if needed. Most uppers can use a little touch.

Nothing magic, it won't change a 1 1/2 MOA gun into a 1/2 MOA, but everything goes into the whole, and doesn't hurt.

I also have several 1/2MOA guns that have never been trued.

Re: Opinions on lapping upper receiver

Well I called WOA today since I'm using one of their 18" spr barrels. They said unless you had an upper that was just awful they don't see any need in squaring the front of the receiver. They wanted to torq the barrel nut between 70 - 90 ft/lbs. They said this would alleviate any such problem. Also wanted to apply red loctite to the barrel extension.

Re: Opinions on lapping upper receiver

If windage is correct--such that canting isn't an issue--I assume truing is the correct solution if elevation can't be corrected to zero the irons. That's what I'm currently dealing with...but if it's within spec, I see no need to true. Does it also help noticeably with accuracy?

WOA 's opinion was that loctite was more benifical to improving accuracy than squaring the front of the receiver.

Re: Opinions on lapping upper receiver

If you have an elevation issue and the barrel extension isn't seating all the way the recess for the barrel extension in the upper receiver should be the first suspect...

Lot's of opinions, but WOA builds the uppers that national champions use. I'd go with their opinion.
