Have a H&K Mod 91 , Had it since the late 70’s. Far from a safe queen , shes been taken really good care of.
Like new when purchased , I’ve put maybe 800-1000 rounds total.
Had a Williams Set Trigger installed years ago , shoots great ! I have a Hensoldt on a H&K claw mount now.
I had another H&K claw mount ...30mm and 1in inserts. I put the Leupold MK 4 2.5-8x36mm MR/T on it because I already had it...plus there wasn’t near the choices in optics like now.

NOW...to the question ? Want to put the MK4 on another rifle so I will need a another scope for my 91.
I plan on shooting either on the deck using the H&K bipod or bags. Don’t expect it to shoot like a PSG1-A1 , but it’s still a good dependable shooter. What ever scope I get , I have a stash of some good quality 7.62x51. Federal 168 gr BTHP.

In your gentlemen’s opinion , what would your optics choices

be ? I want to be able to engage at semi-close distance out to say 1,000 yds. If I can find a Hendsoldt 6X42 or maybe a Schmidt & Bender ? Prefer MOA, can do MRAD ....Help me spend some $$$ !

Too bad the 91 doesn’t have the same mount options as the 21E/23E. This is my transferable HK21E/23E belt fed MG in the 11E magazine fed configuration with a detachable scope mount and a Tangent Theta 525P Gen3XR. Steiner is a good choice.

You have a awesome setup .....Wow 👍 I was trying to keep mine as German as possible in regards to optics.
I’ve always heard that “ happiness is a belt fed weapon” ... you got the bases covered 👌

Thanks. That Tangent stays on one of my bolt guns most of the time. Like having the Era Tac quick release mount so I can easily move it. I have one of the US made T series Steiners. Nice optic for the money. Assuming you are getting the German made M series. My 91 has the 4X Hensoldt.

Seems like most M series Steiners are 34mm instead of 30mm like my H&K claw mount , I think ??
The Hendsoldt 4x might be the way to go ...the one I have has been treated rough ...the objective is even bent. Might can find a nicer one , and call it good !? I would know the scope would be clear of the charging handle and has good eye relief.
    Thanks !!👍

OP, thank you for the back story, always great to hear about the history of such iconic firearms. The HK-91 was the very first semi-auto rifle I owned after getting out of the Army, it had captured my heart as a teenager in the mid 80's (in fact, I think I still have a copy of the magazine "International Combat Arms" where I first saw it featured, I also have an original HK brochure from the 80's somewhere in my basement which featured all HK rifles and pistols at the time, including the 91 and 93, I digress). To be honest, my "HK-91" wasn't actually an HK, it was a Springfield Armory SAR3 which was made on the same tooling as the HK and interchangeable with parts. I bought it in the late 80's in Kalifornia when they were first starting their moronic gun laws and it came with a cheesy wood thumbhole stock that I quickly replaced with a genuine HK91 stock. I had it until '93 when I sold it to buy a bed (a man's got to sleep) figuring I could buy another semi auto once finances got better, and within months the Clintonista gun ban went into effect and I couldn't grab a semi-auto, at least not one that I wanted until the ban expired in 2004 at which point I went out and purchased an AR-15. I still love that HK design and smile every time I see one so appreciate you sharing.

I think a rifle like that deserves a scope to match, so a classic German military scope from the era seems most appropriate but unfortunately I do not have much knowledge in those older scopes so won't even pretend to offer up a suggestion and will leave that to the experts. But I will watch the thread to see what you ultimately choose and show off more pics of your rig.
