Hello all,

I recently got a bergara HMR in 300wm. The main purpose of the rifle is to hunt elk. Outside of the occasional elk hunt, I have a 2k yard range close to me that i frequent.

I typically have someone with me when I am shooting at distance, but not always. Because of this, I am in need of a very effective muzzle break so I am able to spot my own shots when I am at the range by myself. I am a big dude and recoil doesn't really bother me, heck i put 80 rounds down range the first time I shot the rifle without it phasing me, but I just really want to reduce the the muzzle rise after a round is fired. I have looked around online and there is quite a bit of people's personal accounts or opinions of different muzzle breaks they like to use, but i have been unable to find a thread or webpage that actually does a solid comparison of some of the major breaks that are available.

Most people hate them because of the looks, but I personally love the JP eliminators. But on a hunting weight 300WM, it is going to be pretty hard to spot shots through the scope regardless of the brake.
beig that i shoot at distance, it gives me a bit more time to get my target back in my sight... with no muzzle break, i was just shy of being able to get a good sight picture on my target at the range before my projectile made impact. I think with any decent muzzle break, it will give me enough aid to at least spot for myself with most shots. I will look into the break you suggested! thanks!

is there any kind of informative data with this break when directly compared with other options on the market?

I'm not convinced that a really definitive test has been done on muzzle brakes and many can be pretty subjective. The thing I notice in the vid, is the guy screwing it on and off by hand (maybe just for testing I don't know). When the smith put one on my 300 wsm, it is not coming off by hand.

I use the PVA Shockwave on my 300WM and can easily spot my own hits/misses and really does a good job mitigating the recoil without too nasty of a side-blast. The PVA Jetblast has the same port design but has one less port than the Shockwave and is rated up to 300WM. So that might be more along the line of what you are looking for in a hunting application.

I am a new member of Snipers Hide having recently signed up. But I have on the site many times and have read thousands of SH posts as I am interested in shooting out to 1000 yds. I have been very interested in longer distance shooting and entering local matches for about 11 years. However, getting married and having two kids delayed things for that decade plus time span. Add in a decent five figure bonus and pay raise after a good company year and I am back to finally give this a go! I have access to two 1k ranges locally and a third about two hours’ drive from here. Plus, I live in the dessert so pretty lucky on the whole longer shooting range availability thing. The end result of all of the above is like you I purchased a Bergara B14 HMR in 300WM in the last couple of weeks. I plan on using it for elk hunts as well so I did not go with the 6.5 Creedmore.

I have also read the that Precision Rifle Blog brake/suppressor review and based on that purchased the Masterpiece Arms .30 Caliber Cowl Induction Muzzle Brake from Eurooptic,

Since I am still running down a new scope to install on this rifle, I have not had a chance to try it out yet. I can say installing and uninstalling is a snap. People also have a lot of good things to say about the Hellfire Self Timing Muzzle Brake as well

https://www.area419.com/product/hellfire_st/

That will be my go too if the MPA brake does not work out.

My personal recoil handling ability falls squarely between any of the unbraked .300WMs’ I have fired and my Weatherby Mark5 .300 Weatherby Mag, (also without a brake). The Weatherby is just a bit much for me and the thin barrel profile does not lend itself to installing a brake. I figure even if these brakes work half as well as claimed I am GTG.

I have a line on significantly discounted NIB Leupold Mark 5 5x25x56 so will be ordering that this week. When I get it all together, I will post on how the MPA brake performs on my HMR.

Please post a range report on yours when you get a chance. I will do the same.

Wishing you all the best.

For what it is worth, I typically have run a gen2 HD razor 4.5-27 on my rifles, but for this "hunting rifle" I decided to get something decent but far less costly since i did not plan on shooting it as much. I decided to get an athlon ares ETR. MANNNNNN let me tell you how impressed with it I am. I get a clearer sight picture at 2000 yards with it than my razor and it tracks amazing. I picked it up for $800. The value is there and if you havent made the purchase of your scope yet, I highly suggest at least looking into them. Rex has some videos on youtube about them as well and he was just as impressed with the optic as i was.

Thank you for the recommendation. In this case the Leupold Mark 5 is already a done deal. I am wanting to try my hand at some local meets as well as hunt with this scope, hence the 5x25 choice. To date I have always hunted with my Leupold Mark 4.5x14x50 on either my go to hunting rifle M1a NM, or for larger game (elk) my .300 Weatherby. That scope has taken all the punishment I have handed out and performed every time.

I was looking something more this go around. I am generally a buy once cry once kind of guy. I looked at a lot of Nightforce scopes and Vortex before ending back up at the Mark 5. I thought the Vortex was a bit heavy but really liked the glass, Nightforce was just out of my price range. What sealed it in the end was the large discount on the Leupold Mark 5 through a friend.

I have never looked through an Athlon scope. I will make a point of doing so. I have read a lot of good things about them. I don’t recall seeing them in my LGS. I will take a look during my next Cabela’s/Bass Pro Shop run, (a few hours’ drive) to see if they have some.

I hope to have a range report in the next 10 days or so. Depends on work.

Best Regards,

I’d like to put in a good word for the area 419 sidewinder, I’d say recoil is around the .243 mark. I spot myself also with a Nightforce ATACR 7-35. The reduction of jump allows for follow up shots on clusters of varmints.

I actually am purchasing a "take off" 300wm muzzle brake from an RPR for extremely cheap.
