I am looking for suggestions to create a nice Day/Night combination for .308 Remington. I would like to stay in the $1,400-$1,900 range.

I am thinking a NightForce 8-32 x 56 Precision Benchrest Illuminated scope ($1,200) for the day scope.

I would like a Gen1 night vision like a PS22, but less expensive. ($300-$800)

I will be using the night vision mostly for small varmint.

Re: Options for Day/Night scopes

Well with NV, as with many things, you get what you pay for. Even more so with NV.

You will not be able to find anything in that price range that you will be happy with. And certainly nothing that will resolve small varmints at the ranges you are looking for. I have a really great Gen 3 NV weapon sight that on a low ambient night would be hard to make out small varmints at 200. I don't say this because it's the typical "only buy the best once" mantra, but because it's just true. Gen 1 is just not good.

Best comparison I have for you is this: buying a Gen 1 NV weapon sight is EXACTLY the same as a guy wanting to buy a 75-80 dollar scope for competitive benchrest shooting. It just doesn't work.

My suggestion to most guys first venturing into purchasing a NV system is to save up and get a used, low run time, Gen 3 or Gen 3B IIT.
