Not because its another rifle in the collection which is always cause for celebration, but because this is for my son who will be turning 9 next month. Will be his first gun (not counting his bb, airsoft, and NERF guns of course)

I knew he has been wanting a rifle, he has been hinting at it, but whenever I ask him what he wants for XMAS/Bday he lists the basic kid stuff. I suspect he just thinks that a rifle is to far out of reach for a bday present. Was looking at the Rascals other single shots for XMAS but he ended up with way too many other gifts, plus we took a family trip as a gift, so enough money was spent.

Then last weekend I took him with me to central Oregon for a weekend of camping and long range shooting. He put a few rounds through my .260 but it was too much for him to enjoy, but he did come close to the 900 yard target. He put a round on a 400 yarder with my AR (which isn't built for precision, just a 7lb run and gun rifle with ACOG but has proven to be damn accurate).

We set a mini tombstone at 105 yards for him and he put a couple hundred rounds through my suppressed .22 bolt gun. I knew right then a single shot wasn't gonna cut it. So after a little research ordered him the Savage. Figure it was only a little more than a single shot and is a rifle he can keep/shoot/enjoy forever. I gladly spent a couple hundred bucks on a rifle instead of $80 on video games. He's gonna be so excited. My father acquired a scope and rings for him so he'll be ready to go. I have ammo to get him started but we're on the hunt for more like everyone else. I'm sure he's gonna want to thread/suppress it right away so he'll be spending some time working on the farm earning money to do that.

Bottom line is I'm stoked and can't wait to give it to him.

My very first rifle was the same one he was shooting last weekend. Ruger 77/22 Allweather. When I was in middle school and wanted a rifle instead of the basic 10/22 that was standard for everyone else I really wanted a bolt gun so saved my pennies, worked on the farm, and combined with a Xmas present got one. I've since done a trigger, added optics, threaded, and suppressed and I'll never get rid of it.

My son just got his first last weekend. Savage Mark II G, Vortex 2x7 Diamondback. Had him help mount the bases, rings and scope, he ran the torque wrench so it really was his rifle. It was also his 9th Birthday. Not sure when his smile was bigger when he opened the box, looked at his first 20 round group (all but 2 in the 10 ring at 30 yards) or after the first ground squirrel he smoked. All in all an awesome day and can't wait for many more to come.
Of course little brother wants one too, he'll just have to wait a couple more years. Have fun and enjoy these times!
