hello, new member here.

if i wanted a .308 rifle, for .308 ranges, ready out of the box.
what would be a good low budget alternative?
lets just concentrate on the rifle for now, and leave optics for later.

thanks.

That's so bad. There aren't any Walmart's in Norway. You should know that.

Why so sarcastic? His question has probably never asked on here before.

Norway: Run a search for yourself: don't use the search engine on this website and use the custom one that is in the bottom of my signature.

Re: out of the box .308?

20" AAC-SD.

I picked up one that was new out the door for $600.00
Swapped the stock with a B&C LTR $206 + - at midway,
Adjusted the trigger to, 2 lbs.
Added a HS/P mag system.
Plus it comes threaded 5/8X24 for whatever you want to hang up front.

I've had many .308's over the years an nothing, including my GAP's, shot or shoot like this short bitch. It cares little what you feed it either. 500 rds down the tube and never a hint of copper at any time.
Only draw back is they coated the receiver an bolt 100%. Took awhile to remove that crap so she feeds smooth, instead of like grinding sandpaper.

Re: out of the box .308?

really???????? this question is beat to death on this forum, please search the hide a bit before further questions. However, welcome to the Hide, and as posted above a decent remington or savage will do you good

Re: out of the box .308?

what do you have to choose from in norway? what brands can you get? how are the gunsmiths there? savage is a nice choice since you can change the barrels easily on your own and have multiple calibers easily.

Re: out of the box .308?

My remington 700 SPS tactical was sub-MOA right out of the box, using Hornady 168gr Amax match and federal 168gr SMK match ammo.

How much below 1 MOA I don't know, because I have aged and my eye twitches a lot so I cannot tell how accurate the rifle is versus how accurate I can shoot it.

Since he is in Norway that would be the best for him and probably cheapest

Re: out of the box .308?

Isn't it the point of the forum to discuss gun questions?

To the OP, it seems like the Remington 700 SPS Tactical is a good starting point.

I've had the exact same results with mine.

Take the time to do some searches here and you will be rewarded with all kinds of information! There is a similar thread with further useful advice at:

Remington and Savage here in the US, have rifles you can get into reasonable. Start shooting and if you don't like something upgrade or re-sell. Get a rifle you can sell off if don't like. Sometimes used is a great way to go, but depends so shop around if want to find a good deal on a nice gun. Watch the For Sale section here, go to your local retailers, and keep your eyes out online. Often a local large retailer who has volume, can custom order what you want from the manufacturer new for less than you can get it elsewhere.

As was recommended above, sorry no experience here with the Tikka to compare or share.

Welcome to the Hide!

Re: out of the box .308?

Best out-of-the-box is the Tikka T3, hands down. Around $700 here.

Or go with a Savage Stevens 200 in .308 for $350 or so (but I'm not sure on the availability where you're at).

Tikka has the greatest trigger of a stock, sub-$1k rifle I've ever handled. You won't be sorry.

Re: out of the box .308?

My SPS-T AAC-SD is easily sub moa. After 8 shots to sight in, the next 5, 5 shot groups were all sub moa with the last 3 being a little under 0.75. I've been flabergasted by it. If I were you I'd take a hard look at the SPS-T, SPS-T AAC-SD, and the 5R depending on your needs.

Re: out of the box .308?

I love my Tikka T3 Varmint. I have a .223 though. Took it out yesterday for the second time shooting it and shot a .404" group at 120yds. I is bone stock and the barrel isnt broke in yet either.

Re: out of the box .308?

A great out of the box rifle is a Tikka Master Sporter 595. They are hard to find now days but something different other than Remington or Savage, which are great rifles also. The Tikka Master Sporter has a super crisp trigger and amazingly smooth action.
I regret selling my Master Sporter.

Re: out of the box .308?

Tikka T3

Scout, Super Varmint, or Varmint preferably.

Other T3's shoot as well but these have heavy barrel contours and different coatings.

Picked up scout for 860 out the door and loved it. Course I also put an 850 stock on it. The factory stock will work if short on funds though, just bed it. Amazing out of the box rifle.

Re: out of the box .308?

if you have the time and you have places to look, keep an eye out for a used savage or remington. i only gave $300 for my savage model 10 and that shot 3/4 moa consistently with handloads and factory loads. thats even with the cheap simmons scope that came with it and the pencil thin factory barrel.

Re: out of the box .308?

Hey guys, new here.

Anyone ever try the Thompson Center Venture rifles? I saw on their site that they have a 1 MOA or better guarantee, and the venture is only about $400-$450.

Re: out of the box .308?

and another thing with buying a used savage or remington, there is always a market if you choose to sell it down the road, in which case you would probably be able to get what you paid, maybe more.

+ 1

Don't think there will be anything better than the Tikka Master Sporter M595... It will be the last rifle I ever part with.

IMHO the Tikka T3 Master Sporter would be worth looking in to. I've also seen great results from the Savage 10P with either the HS Precision Tactical or the McMillan stock.

Re: out of the box .308?

FYI, the decision to buy my M595 Master Sporter originated from a thread like your's, on this website. Many customs later it still shoots as good or better than any custom I have shot. Don't sweat putting up the thread.

I would guess Euros. Gun stuff is pretty expensive in Europe from what I've seen. (I'm in Germany at the moment)

Re: out of the box .308?

I'd suggest a rather basic, entry-level Remington or Savage Varmint rifle. I'd also suggest a rather basic and reliable scoped bolt action .22lr repeater to do the bulk of your training and practice with. Save the .308 for hunting, matches, and load testing if you handload.

The Savage 12FVSS and Savage MKIIF would be my first suggestions for the two. Until your skills demonstrate a significant need for something better, the Tasco VAR624X42M scope will serve your needs for both rifles, and do it at a very affordable cost. It really is the exception to the rule about only expensive scopes working well enough to seriousy consider buying.

Simply put, these rifles work well, and keep in doing it. You'd need to spend a lot more on a custom build. For the most part, these Savage rifles already shoot better than most of their owners can when they're new in the box, and will do continue to so for quite some time afterward. That's exactly the sort of rifle a new shooter needs to do their basic training with. You should never need to retire them; and they can be upgraded as easily as any others, even easier than most.

Allow me to welcome you to Snipers' Hide, and to assure you that we do take an interest in our new forum members.

I think they all deserve the benefit of the doubt until they demonstrate a need for a different approach.

Steffen, could you give us a rough approximation of "low budget"?
That would help us to advise you on the future purchase.

Re: out of the box .308?

by low budget i mean, the amount of money i need to spend to get a sufficient result.

after starting this thread i have been thinking.
i would rather give up 800-1000m capability for lightness and portability, seeing as i won't shoot farther than maximum 500-600m.

remingtons are much more available then savages over here.
so i'm considering the rem sps tactical, with a 2,5-10x or similar scope.

Re: out of the box .308?

I would suggest a savage PC in .308, the ones I have been around shoot very well. They are affordable and carry very nice for hunting use. The one we own shoots better then my LTR and is moa out to 800yds with handloads.

This is a sweet rifle...

I got the remmy 700 sps. built it up as I went. I paid $450.00 used, and a diecent shooter for a factory rifle.

Re: out of the box .308?

PLEASE consider a Rem 700 SPS Tactical as it is the best shooting rifle out of the box for the price...i even named by Hide's user name after it
