Painting Steel for Higher Visibility

Was shooting at 1k this past weekend. IPSC sized silhouette painted flat white. For a good part of the day spotting hits was no problem, until we had some pretty aggressive mirage for about 30-40 minutes.

Was wondering if there are any tricks of the trade on this, like laying down a base layer of bright orange on the steel the night before shooting, and then painting white over it the day of shooting? Something to make the hits a bit more noticeable in times of high mirage?

Not much helps in heavy mirage. More contrast color between target amd background will help, but you're already doing that with white paint.

I would use the opportunity to watch how mirage dances the target, adjust optic magnification, and practice shooting through mirage. It's a good skill to learn.

What he said, you need contrast. I’ll add that gloss colors are better imo. I like white most of the time but when the sun gets high enough that it’s no longer shining on the face of the target, the white washes out and loses contrast. If I need to keep shooting, I’d repaint in gloss black.

Good call, not sure if the paint I was using was gloss or not. Will double check. Thx for the advice on the black.
