MILLVALE, Pa. - Two parents face charges after authorities say motorists spied a 10-year-old girl riding in a dog cage in the back of a pickup truck in western Pennsylvania.

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports ( Millvale parents charged with driving with girl, 10, in dog cage in bed of pickup | TribLIVE) police say it happened around 7 p.m. Monday on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Millvale, just outside Pittsburgh. Authorities say they responded after getting reports from motorists who saw the girl riding in the back of the truck in the cage.

Her mother, 29-year-old Abbey Carlson, and stepfather, 30-year-old Thomas Fishinger, are now facing charges of endangering the welfare of a child. Police say they told them the girl had said she wanted to be with the dog.

Reliable telephone listings for the couple could not immediately be located and it wasn't clear if they had an attorney.

My 10 year old daughter would probably love to ride around in the back of the truck in a dog cage with her dog and would think it was the best thing ever.

How many of use "old-timers" drove around in the back of a pickup as kids?

I let my kids ride in the back of my truck with my dogs now. However, I only do it on country roads because I know this crap will happen if I drive into town. To many people know how to raise your kids better than you. My wife, who grew up in Tiawan, used to ride with her brother and 2 sisters on her uncles motorcycle, with him operrating the motorcycle. That's right, 5 people on one motorcycle. People in the US would shit themselves if they saw that.

I must have been 15 or so before I found out there was seat in the cab of the truck. Of course must of the time it was on country roads and no body drove at the speeds we drive today. Sure was fun...

What I remember was going along for rides in the back of my uncle's '6X-something gold convertible Galaxie 500, eight-track blaring, whipping by head-high-on-a-horse corn stalks on either side of the two-lane roads, as I tried to pick bugs out of my teeth. It looked something like this:

Good times.
