Rifle Scopes part 3- Which scope for my 260 for 600-1000yd comp

OK now that my Savage 10FCP HS Precision SA w/ 28" SS bull 260 barrel is on its way its time to start thinking about the optics for it. Ive pretty much blown my budget and a bit more on the rifle so I'm gonna have to start planning/ saving for the scope.

SO, nothing extravagent, just something dependable with decent glass at 1000 yd.

I will put a 1 piece picatinny rail on it to mount the scope to.

SOOO, what power? is 22x-25x enough? or do I need to go to 32x or better?

What reticle? mil dot? mil hash? MOA hash? How do you 600-1000yd shooters calculate range when needed? range finder, mil dots only, mils dots with mil dot master?

What brand? so many to choose from and many new brands since I really researched scopes 15+ years ago.

I can upgrade at a later date but right now I need to get it shoot ready asap for upcoming competitions.

I also need to start figuring out a hand full of loads to test out. I can take the Buckmaster 6-18 x40 w/ trueplex reticle off the Ar15 for load development.

Edit: I would also love it if it had a FFP reticle but I dont know if there are any in the 400.00 or less price range.

As always , thanks for any help / tips/ advice.

Did I miss it, what kind of "comp"?

If a tactical comp then 22-25 is WAY more than enough. I shoot a 4-16 Hensoldt and it doesn't hold me back.

If F-Class or something like that, I have no idea, but again I would think 22-25 is plenty. Above that mirage really starts to play into it.

Depends primarily on your budget.
A Falcon 5.5-25 mil/mil will get you there and beyond.

The 4-14 will get you there on "tactical" type targets.

A SFP viper (I believe 6.5-24) mil-dot will work for about 399.

Re: part 3- Which scope for my 260 for 600-1000yd comp

Like fdkay said the viper 6-24 is a good option for now. However I rarely use mine past 14 or 16 for tactical type matches. As long as you range on 14 you will be gtg.

Re: part 3- Which scope for my 260 for 600-1000yd comp

Are you shooting F class at known distances or are you shooting tacticals where you need to range with the reticle and calculate hold offs?

For 600 - 1000yd comps at known distances, get a Nightforce 8-32 or 12-42. For F class I like my 8-32 NP-2DD, and 32X is plenty. I can see the X in the center of the target. Some others use more target type x-hair/dot configurations.

If you are shooting tactical stuff trying to ring steel then any number of scope will do the trick. Falcon Menace 5.5-25 sort of starts the bottom of the FFP ranging reticle set. You can pick them up for $400 or so used here. It goes up from there to $3K+ for Hensholdt, or Schmidt & Benders. All of them will do the job. It is kind of like horsepower in a car or a bike, you can get 15% more for about $1000, every 5% after than the price doubles. Those numbers are made up, but they convey the idea.

And like you I doubt I'll use any magnification over 15-16x but I like having the higher power for load development....ALthough. I may be better off just switching to my 6-18 for load development...

It will most likely end up with three different roles.

I'm a varmint hunter so varmints at unknown distances.
Some F-class type shooting with known distances out to 1000
And once I learn the gun/ scope/ mil dot calculations I'd love to get into the more tactical stuff.

I'm thinking higher magnification for the known distances matches.
Varmint hunting would need higher magification and a ranging FFP reticle might be nice too.
Tactical steel target at unknown range stuff might not NEED the higher magnification and a FFP would definatley help, but I dont have to use the higher powers.

SO, I think a higher max power scope would be best all around.

Also, dont tell Carvera but I plan to swipe one of his scopes while hes putting the 28" barrel on my rifle...shhhh

I'm also planning to join the local Tin Can Club (20 guys with a different type of shootout every other wednesday) at at the local range where they shoot there is about an 80% chance youll have a 10-15 mile an our wind each day. (its tight in the mouth of a canyon so its almost always windy.)
So I will use this 260 there during the "ANY rifle" competitions. 100-300 yards
