Gunsmithing Parts compatibility

Hi,
I'm building a new rifle and I'm worried about parts compatibility. I would appreciate your comments.
This is what keeps me worried:

rem 700 short action
AICS 1.5 short action
1.230" straight barrel 24" (will this fit into the stock?)
shilen trigger (will I have to modify the stock?)

The AICS has a BIG channel - should be fine

Had a 1.250" x 30" once, never again. To be honest, the same rifle was re-built using a HV 1.200" x 30" and shot better. Now at 27" it shoots even better. While the MTU/M24 contours are popular the LV/HV contours are a good compromise and are what I use on my personal rifles. I'm seeing barrels scaled down slightly and even building on Remington Varmint contours now.

When a 1.230" barrel or larger is coupled with an AICS, receiver and Glass, that’s gonna be a pig. I'm betting 25+ Lbs. Keep this in mind, in an AICS it may be more than a little top heavy.

This rifle weighs around 23+ Lbs

I know it's going to be heavy but since I won't be dragin' it too much around the field I thought I would be better with a thicker contour.

I read somewhere that thicker barrel = stiffer = better.

If the AICS can take it and holds is all I care.

I will also replace the factory lug with the badger one to reduce action' fatige caused by the heavy barrel.

After a couple of sessions in the gym I think I will be able to handle the rifle... at least a couple of meters

Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think you know how annoying heavy it's going to be.

yeah i would have to agree its going to be a heavy mother, and im not to sure i want to know what glass you are going to put on there. I wouldnt want to carry that thing very far

That is still a bunch of weight to hang on a short action Remington. I think the lug will help, but what I think people like to do for accuracy with a heavy barrel like that is use a barrel block set up, where the action and front of the barrel are basically free-floating. I will love to see some pictures of this thing though!!

You're scaring me

Maybe I'll call the barrel maker and ask him to reduce diameter to 1.15"? Or less?? Will that help?
I hope I still can change my order.

I've to wait about 20 weeks to get the barrel and maybe 4 more weeks to get it screwed on to the action. I'll post pics as soon as it's ready...

it is likely to shoot well LOL, just be heavy on the front end. A slight taper adds to the rigidity too I have been told, but haven't researched that at all. It may be too late if your smith has already ordered the blank in. Unless he is confident enough to turn it down himself... If it is already close to being completed, just run what you got for a while, a re-barrel isn't that expensive in the scheme of this game.

Why not just go with a MTU? I think its plenty heavy to do what you need. I went with a deep fluted 28" Rock MTU for my 7WSM build.

It's a Krieger MTU @ 26"....it was 23lbs. before the IMUNS was added.

PVS-22 and the suppressor should make it push 30lbs when its all said and done.

have you actually weighed that? that sounds more like an 18-19 lb rifle without the imuns. i could see 20 lbs with the imuns.

Yes, it was actually weighed. 23lbs with scope, bipod, empty 10rd mag, basically as you see it minus the IMUNS.

It gets carried from the truck to the ground and/or bench and back.

i'm not seeing where the extra weight is coming from. mine was about 18 lbs with a similar scope. my barrel profile is slightly lighter (broughton 7.1) but it is 27" plus a muzzle brake and it is a long action. i also did a mtu barrel .308 with an aics that was finished at 24" plus a badger thruster brake and nsx scope and it was around 18 lbs. i must be missing something obvious here.
