There is NO REASON to buy this ammo unless you need to shoot through steel. Many ranges will not allow it because dumbasses shoot the steel gongs with it.
IT WILL RUIN STEEL TARGETS. It craters some and holes others.
Now if you get it for stupid cheap, then buy it. It goes bang and put holes in stuff. It's accurate enough to hit a man sized target at 500 yards. I never checked it for group sizes, but I am sure some here have.
There is nothing magic or special and it's not really armor piercing. Most current issue rifle rated armor will stop it. </div></div>
^^ THIS! ^^
I have a bunch of M855/SS109 and I don't really shoot it much any more because it is bad for ringing steel, you can't use it when competing or practicing because of the "no-steel" situation. Also, for your pusposes of buying some now...it isn't worth what most places now charge as a "premium" versus standard surplus or "plinking" ball ammo.
I bought the stuff I still have in an insane deal at the Knob Creek MGS a while back. Of what I have left over, 500 rounds of it is straight surplus 62gr SS109 while the remaining 2k I still have is a pull-down, remanufacturered offering from Amer-I-Can Enterprises (Jerry Hazlett). I got in on a de facto group buy with a bunch of buddies I had with me at the shoot and we cleaned Jerry out of all the M855 reloads he had left to the tune of approx. 20,000 rounds at $189/1k...it was a deal none of us could pass up!! I got 3k rounds for less than $0.19/round! I mostly use it now for cheap break-in or sight-in ammo so that I'm not wasting more expensive ammo.
