Bear was taken on the 12th day of the hunt. Hunted the first eight days on snow shoes in high winds. Weather finally broke and snow melted off. Sometimes perseverance is rewarded.

Re: Peninsula Brown Brown

Thanks WCD, no rubs, very nice hide. The hide squared 10' 1"
and the skull went 28 5/16" B & C.
I used a custom Sako in 338 RUM with 225 gr. Barnes TTSX. Shot him through both shoulders at 209 yds. DRT, never moved. The bullet was under the hide and weighed 224.28 gr.
The stalk took four hours to loop in front of him. Spotted him from aprx. 1 1/2 miles at 5:30 AM got back to camp at 11:50 PM. with the hide and skull.

That is one hell of a bear!! A 10 foot bear is not easy to come by. The retained weight of the Barnes is amazing. Maybe I should change my ways, and start using these. Glad to see your hunt was a successful. Well done.

Re: Peninsula Brown Bear

No way could I carry the hide and skull in one piece. The hide with the feet skinned out down to and cut off at the knuckles weighed over 100 lbs. easily. 300 yds. between rests was about max. on the packing. Go 300 yds. drop your pack and then backtrack back to your gun and clothes, carry them 300 yds.and start over again. 800 mg. Ibuprofen were desert that night! The tundra was like walking on a giant uneven sponge. With each step you would sink down three to four inches.

Re: Peninsula Brown Bear

sweet bear! pardon me if I'm off topic, but some friends and I have been looking to do a rafting trip next year out on the Penninsula, around Aniakchak National Monument. As it stands now, we're not planning to do any hunting, but it is allowed in the park so that might change. I was wondering if any of you gentlemen might be willing to throw a word or two of advice my way in regards to the conditions in the area. All I've managed to dig out from my boss here at the ranger station is that the weather is absolutely bat crazy. I've been lurking around for a few years now, but I might have missed the pertinent 45.308 briefing on it. Thanks ahead of time, and xring, I hope you don't mind that I've been describing your bear's awesome size to the public during my safety orientations.

Re: Peninsula Brown Bear

I heard the story not long after your hunt. Glad to see the photos. I would love to see that Barnes as well. Impressive to say the least. Congratulations.

Take care,
