I have to say I've been a lot dumber with a PEQ-2. Nothing like sitting in a building overwatching an IP or IA checkpoint for a few days. You will eventually get bored and see if you can get them to start pawing at their eyes like a cat. I hope Karma is fictitious ideology.
You know, some of you sound like whiney little bitches. Some guys are out fighting a war, are blowing off steam, and you just bitch about how you can't get military gear. Well, go join up, get deployed to whereever they are out risking their lives, and you can do stupid shit with the tax dollars as you see fit.

Nobody is whining. I played with a lot of stuff in the .mil, but I still wish I could have it. Seeing as how our founding fathers intended for the average citizen to have access to the same gear as the professional military, all I see is a few guys wishing that their constitutional rights were tangible, and at the same time admiring some cool kit.

BTW - my 15-year old son watched this and laughed. He thought the video was great. Know why? He has a sense of humor, and isn't a whiney bitch. He doesn't cry when everything in the world can't be his. He can't have an M-249, a TOW missile, or a PEQ-15 unless he joins the military. I think it's about irony and that we hear how normal civvies aren't responsible enough to have this type of gear all the while watching grunts sword fight with the shit. We get the humor in it and any of us that have been grunts understand the boredom and downtime that comes with the job. Those of us that are mentioning it actually still use the gear for personal use and having mil hardware is generally the most tested and robust gear. You would have to actually use the stuff to know though.

The restrictions on IR lasers are just on the output or intensity of them, because they are dangerous to the eye, and you can't see them. So what? Get a lower powered one. Uhh... Civilians can own peq-15s. I totally understand why these are restricted, and very hard to come across. Not everyone is as responsible as the guys here at the hide. Think of the 13 year olds picking up one of these at wal-mart and intentially blinding the bully that gave him a wedgie last year in the locker room. No one would have any idea what had happened. Maybe they should become an NFA item. Not too many people splurge for a $200 tax stamp and break the law with that item.
I have to admit, I've been ROTFLMAO to that video for a couple of years now. It has got to be one of my favorite laser-theme videos of all time. Thanks for reposting it.
Folks need to know however, that they are not using PEQ-15s. Though the sequences are filmed through a night vision optic, note how the actors are not wearing any night vision that would enable them to see infrared (IR) laser beams, and yet they are able to perfectly synchronize their "light saber" contacts and swashbuckling. Note also that there are spectators that are also not wearing night vision and who can see the "light saber" action.
These young Marines are smarter than everyone is giving them credit for. They are using the equivalent to the GLARE MOUT, which is a Green Beam Dazzler, used to visually warn or optically stun and disorient without causing eye injury. They are commonly deployed at vehicle check points. The newer variants can either be manually adjusted or automatically adjusted on the output intensity to NOHD (Nominal Ocular Hazard Distance) standards to protect against eye damage. The visible green beam allows these Marines and their spectators to see the beam trace without wearing night vision. However, the green beam appears even more intense and bright when viewed with night vision, such as the one used for the filming.
As long as these Marines are careful not to score a "direct hit" with the beam going directly into anyone's eye, no one is going to get injured -- and note how well choreographed their action is. However, if someone were to get the beam directly in their eye, they would only be temporarily stunned or flash blinded. Note, it is not pleasant to get a green dazzler in the eye and it can be a surprisingly painful experience, but rest assured there would be no permanent eye damage on momentary or limited exposure.
Granted, there have been tragic mistakes where Green Beam III weapons aiming lasers were accidentally ordered and issued to our troops for use as glare devices instead of the Green Beam Dazzlers, and these have resulted in serious eye injury. For this reason, it is always most prudent to treat any laser like a firearm, and unless the intent is to "shoot" someone or something with it, to always keep the laser output pointed in a safe direction, away from people, animals or motor vehicles and away from anything that could reflect the beam toward these.
However and again, the lasers used for the video are green beam dazzlers, not infrared laser aimers.
The photo below shows a couple of the Class IV lasers that we've used in our development of military semaphore systems and systems for aiming artillery and long-range, heavy weapons. These are very high output at 800 mW to 1000 mW respectively, and can instantly damage eyesight and night vision optics on direct contact at substantial distances. However, their performance and range as aimers and illuminators (by opening up the lens angle) is spectacular, reaching out to 40 km for aiming and 25 km for illumination. As much as I like thermal imaging, there are still things -- particularly with infrared laser designation and illumination -- that can be achieved with i^2 night vision but which cannot be accomplished with thermal sensors (yet). For these reasons, viva dual-band / fusion imaging as the best of both worlds.

IR-V, I was issues a dazzler and a ghost (6 beam laser that mounts to an m4 and runs on 6 cr123's) both were green and I couldn't see them at all through night vision. However, the Ghost had enough steam you could see it at close range with thermal if you held it stationary for long enough. Not saying you're wrong at all, as I wouldn't argue with you're experience, but I've never been able to see a green laser through NV. Do you think they are using the Vis laser on the 15's?

Delta4-3, Were you running a LIF at the time or Class A, B or C filtered lenses? If so the use of a LIF or filtered AVS lenses would explain why you couldn't see the beam on the green laser.
Hey there Delta 4-3. Thanks for sharing your observations from your experience. Green lasers emit enough radiation in the lower electromagnetic spectrum between visible and near infrared for night vision to detect -- even the ones that are double pumped to reduce in half the starting output in the 1000+ nm range. Are you certain that you were not issued NODs with lens filters blocking laser radiation in this 500 - 700 nm range?
The PEQ-15 uses a relatively low-powered, visible, red laser that is mostly intended to help the user boresight the IR laser aimer (which is slaved to the visible laser) without night vision. The PEQ-15s visible red beam is extremely narrow and gives only a very faint beam trace when viewed with Gen III night vision. The closing sequence outside the tent may have been done with two PEQ-15s held together in one hand, however the principal action inside the tent with the thick beams were clearly conducted with laser devices with IZLID like chasses. The green beam dazzlers are considered a variant of "illuminator" and therefore they output with a more open lens angle, producing a thicker beam.

Thanks, yeah I didn't even think about filters. We used them with our 14's, 15's and ANVIS-9's. That would make sense. I was uncertain on the PEQ-15's Vis being that potent through NV, as that is all we used it for was daytime zeroing, as you mentioned. I actually had a PEQ-2 on mine, limiting my usage even further.
You know a laser is a fun toy when it has it's own safety selector!
I'll post a picture of the Ghost. Blasting an unruly Haj in the face with it at close range was known to induce vomiting.
