PHONE REPAIR

A Kansas farm wife called the local phone company to report her telephone failed to ring when her friends called - and that on the few occasions, when it did ring, her dog always moaned right before the phone rang.

The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile lady. He climbed a telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialled the subscriber's house.

The phone didn't ring right away, but then the dog moaned and the telephone began to ring.

Climbing down from the pole, the telephone repairman found:

1. The dog was tied to the telephone system's ground wire with a steel chain and collar.

2. The wire connection to the ground rod was loose.

3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signalling current when the number was called.

4. After a couple of jolts, the dog would start moaning and then urinate.

5. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone to ring.

Which demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning.

Thought you'd like to know.

Funny but if the dog completed the 90 volt circuit via his own urination (i.e. creating a short) the phone would never receive the "90 volt signaling current" and would never ring.

short? normally the phone would work through the neutral. if the neutral is broke then the phone will work through the ground rod(by design). if the ground rod connection is loose and you are touching it, you will get a poke. the uruine would complete the circuit if he pissed on the bad connection, or he might become a ground for the phone himself. if the connection was good but the ground is really dry the piss would help the ground rod work properly(lowers resistance in soil).
the only way a short would occur is if he pissed on a bare phone wire and the ground wire at the same time and his piss is highly conductive. 90v wont travel very far especially at the amperage they run.
funny story, definitely something you would see in my area.

Re: PHONE REPAIR

That must be some sort of party line service, I haven't seen one in years. Most telephones only operate on Tip and Ring, with the ground wire used to protect the line and equipment from power and lightning. I still thought it was funny.

Oh, I just assumed the phone worked on a typical AC type house set-up but you're right, that wouldn't make sense because I'm pretty sure all phone lines have a 45V live line from the phone company. So the signaling voltage of 90V does that travel through the same line as the 45V or is that one of the other of the four wires?

Re: PHONE REPAIR

The real question: Were electrons flowing from the urine to the ground, or were holes flowing from the ground into the dogs junk?

Poor dog. BTW what is the fuse rating of a dog these days.

I would guess the dog is good for at least 200 ohms so...
