Maggie’s photobucket virus ????

I don't think it is a virus. I think you got hacked or scammed. I just checked mine and it is fine. But i do the opposite of you. I have originals in my possession and only put photos in it that i share with you guys.

I don't trust the cloud. You ever wonder why google or amazon would store all your pictures for you?

its all over the internet this morning that they arent allowing 3rd party hosting without getting paid,,still not sure if its real or someone else ,,looks like they would have warned a guy before shutting it down,,I can still get to my pics but all the pics I have posted online from PB have been blocked ,,

Well I just checked threads I have posted pictures in from photo bucket and they are still working. But of course I did things a little different. I uploaded the pictures to SnipersHide servers, with a link from photobucket. I in fact could not get it to work they way most of you are doing it when we left scout and came back here.

Things are going to be interesting as the new month rolls in because this is gonna TREMENDOUSLY affect blogs and message boards all across the net. Anyone remember what happened with Geocities (or whatever it was called) back in 2005 when they stopped with 3rd party hosting? Message boards everywhere were a total mess! This is such a huge mistake for Photobucket because their service started out as a 3rd party hosting service. Now it's taking away what it was founded upon? The other problem is that not only do you have to pay for your embedded pics to work again, but you have to buy the highest plan on the tier. That right there is total bullshit! While people like me who are hardly poor have no problem paying 40 bucks a month, what about folks starting out with a new business fresh out of college or the military who can't afford an extra 40 bucks a month in their budget and depend on embedding pics to sell their product(s)? Like I said, this upcoming month is gonna be really interesting. I'm gonna be interested in seeing Photobucket's damage control over this.

Call me naive, or paranoid, but lately whenever I try to use my photobucket account they want me to download something or allow something, or install adobe (something-or-other) and I just don't like the idea of "someone else telling me to put something on my computer that 'they' want".

Not sure if that comes across as intended, but ya'll get the gist, no? In this day and age of hackers, malware, and that ransom-shit.... I don't click on NOTHING that I didn't originate to begin with.

As has been understood since 2001 around here, I don't do pictures.

The reasons involve a distaste for vanity, a smattering of OPSEC, and a healthy expectation that somebody, someday, was going to slap a duty on mankind's obsession with self publicity.

I don't need it, and have managed pretty well without picture posting here for the past 16 years.

I still genuinely feel for the victims here.

But it was choice.

Greg

with all of the free image hosting sites.....i really dont know what PB is hoping for?......no one in their right mind will pay for a free service.

Imgur folks. And did Carly Simon just do a drive by?

And what happens to Imgur once it absorbs all the Photobucket refugees? Servers cost money, and how does the average Joe replicate what he gets out of using a photo hosting service without getting an IT degree and yet another computer? Sadly, the Internet isn't free, or, at least, its expense has finally started to come due. Ask Frank what it costs to run this place. Moreover, think about what it really means for him to keep threads and images in perpetuity. Some site business models do periodic cleansing, and offer what is removed to the membership on CD for a fee.

This will really suck for all of the millions of existing informative forum posts that people (including myself) have created over the last fifteen years that included pictures hosted by PB. To be honest, lately I have found it more and more difficult to use PB and to even see my own pictures on that site. In their zeal to force the free loaders (pun intended) to pay, they have so loaded it up with constant banner, pop-up and video ads, that it is virtually unusable. Something that I'm sure that they intended.

I have downloaded all of my pictures on a thumb drive, but have not removed my account yet. Once I know for sure that none of my pictures exist in threads anymore, it will be sayonara PB for me.

And Veer, your point is well taken, but when something like this is handled in a manner that amounts to ransom with little to no warning, I think that it is reasonable to be upset.

Well, we'll see in the very near future I'm sure. Just not something I'm gonna fret over one way or the other. I have no say in the matter so no worries. I'm not gonna lose anything either way.

I'll see your Carly Simon and raise you a Carole King!

I have some old stuff on PB, but that site's cost (free) has been exceeding its value for years. As mentioned, Imgur. You can host photos with or without and account.
PS: Learn to use the mobile app. Most people post their photos to the gallery (made public to all) without ever knowing it.

I expect the vast majority of PB users will respond as I did. I sent them a reply to their Support staff worded thusly:

"Dear Photobucket,

Are you out of your mind? No freakin’ way. You can have ‘em. I don’t see this move working out too well for you."

I don't have anything on there that isn't stored somewhere else.

As to Greg's sanctimonious dig at everyone here who shares things with others who have similar interests, he should try and live up to his own moral standard by refusing to look at or enjoy any pictures posted. While I don't post many pics personally, I do enjoy seeing some of the really cool things you guys post on here. Also, there are many technical and instructional things that are traded here that would be utterly impossible without photos to illustrate. That was uncalled for.

Okay, I'm not too terribly internet savvy, but have always used photobucket.
Is there a similar site to use? Is imgurl (mentioned above) the best alternative?

I should probably keep up with the new stuff, but I've always just used what worked and never paid attention to other options.

You can use snipershide. Hit the paperclip and upload the photo directly to the 'hide server.

You can actually still use photobucket that way. That is what i do.
