Bought a Ruger 556 from a guy who is a regular at the Mickey D's where is get my morning coffe when I go on duty. He bought it 3 months ago and put a RRA match trigger in it. The guy is a nice guy but he has more money than sense. He struck up a conversation with me because he remembered that I said I wanted a piston AR. He wanted to get rid of his because "it won't shoot through a car" and he wants a 6.8. He said that he'd trade it for a Stag 6.8 or the money to buy a new one. I gave him $1100.00 for his rifle and he had only broken the seal on one of the Pmags. I have only shot it with irons and am going to pick up an Eotech tommorow for it and get it sighted in. I have heard some bad things about the Rugers but you hear bad things about any gun. Any body got one that can tell me what to look out for, problem areas etc., other than bolt tilt, already know about that.
Thanks,
Patrick

Re: Picked up a Ruger 556

great price.

I had momma pick me one up when I was in Iraq and over a few R&R's put 3k+ rounds through it without cleaning it. That was 1500 rounds, then back to the box 3-4 months while it sat, then 1k then back to the box 3-4 months. Then another 500+ since I got home. Some people over on BRAFCOM have bad things to say about them cause they new a guy that worked with a guy etc. etc. I wouldn't trade mine for any other AR out there. I have quite a few AR's and the ruger is the smoothest I have shot. The carrier tilt will slow down. I had 1500 on mine before putting KNS pins on it but some people have had problems with the pins walking. at upwards of 3k rounds mine would hold MOA at 100 off the bench so accuracy is there and decent.

Re: Picked up a Ruger 556

Thanks for the reply. I take most of the stuff on Arfcom with a grain of salt the size of Texas. Carrier tilt not with standing, and it's not a problem showing up for me yet, I put 200 rounds down range today and was really happy with the way it shot. Wiped the BCG down with Gunzilla and swabbed the chamber, fastest cleanup on an AR I've ever had. We'll see how she shoots with optics tommorrow I hope. Bounced a Coke can around at 50 yds with irons and seemed to shoot right at point of aim. I'm surprized that you don't hear more about them, it seems like a really soild rifle so far.

Re: Picked up a Ruger 556

I've shot two of the Ruger 556's on separate occasions and found them to be very solid rifles. The only thing I didn't like was how heavy (front heavy) the rifle is and one of the two I shot had a very gritty safety and it was difficult to flip on and off.

Other than that, it shot very well! It shot surprisingly clean, which I guess is the characteristic of the piston AR's.

Re: Picked up a Ruger 556

You definately got a good price on it.

I still hate Ruger for their gun-banning politics but I consider the 556 a peace offering they might be willing to bury the ghost of that traitor Bill.

Mechanically I think the 556 is pretty sound. I would have prefered a 1/7 twist to the 1/9 but I also understand the 1/9 is more practical for 95% of shooters.

I'd say be happy with the bargin you made and don't worry about design issues till/if you have any.
