Anyone here dedicate serious range time, ammo and effort perfecting their shooting technique for handgun hunting or PD between 20-100 yards? I have a Glock 40 MOS topped with a Leupold Deltapoint Pro 2.5 and Dawson co-witness tritium sights (1/3rd) and KKM Nitride match barrel. There are videos of guys using this 10mm (using hot & heavy, hard cast ammo) set up for 100 yard shots and succeeding so I believe the weapon capable. Me? Not so much but I wanna try and learn. Just curious is the greater distance requires any additional disciplines over and above those of EDC/close quarters combat techniques.

I am in the same place as you.....almost. I will be ordering a RDS this week to go on my XDm OSP 10mm.
I got it mainly for a hunting pistol and full time woods carry. I am testing ammo now for reliability and accuracy. I am doing pretty well, out to 40 yards, with the iron sights and am hoping that range gets extended a bit with the RDS.

Will be watching this thread in Hope's some of the pistol Smiths divulge some wisdom.


OP- if you want to watch some good 10mm hunting videos, look up Razor Dobbs on the tube. He has taken animals up to and including Cape Buffalo with his 10mm.

I have shot my bone stock Glock 21 at 100 yards off of a bench, wasn't hard to hit a pie plate. never got more serious than that tho. probably a total of 5-10 rounds. I do tend to shoot at a gong around the 80 yard mark a little also.

nice clean trigger press is is going to be the most important aspect of shooting a hand gun at long range everything else is just narrowing your aiming margin of error, the mechanical accuracy of your platform will be a limitation in any situation, your ammo will be a factor but not as much as people make it

you will be the biggest variable in your shooting particularly with a handgun

which is why so many handgun hunters use revolvers a single action revolver trigger pull is easier to shot without introducing error vs a double action pull same with a 1911 or any single action handgun there is less margin for you to magnify

I just purchased a second 10mm pistol, a Kimber SS Target 1911. Considerably heavier than the Glock.

100 is no problem w a red dot on the 10. Upgrade the trigger..and practice practice practice. I prefer a 44 mag, 454 Casull or 480 Ruger for hunting at that distance. Brace off a tree, use shooting sticks or bench off your knee.

Yes, I was shooting to 125 yd with my Beretta 92, but that is an extremely perishable skill and I did not keep up on it. I'm back out to being consistent at 50.

I shoot at steel offhand out to 200 yds with a number of pistols.
(Usually only 100 yds to keep from crushing my fragile ego)
All open or night sights.
No Red Dots.
Some days I’m really on it.
Some days not so much.
I enjoy the challenge.
I do it best if I have an audience for some reason.

My Springfield 5.25 Match seems to be the easiest.
My Sig P290RS is tough but still gets it done.

I cheat..... 7" Redhawk 44 w/ Leupold 2x and 14" XP-100 .223 w/ Leupold 4-12.

My CZ Shadow2 does well at 100yds, it's impressive how flat 9mm 100y trajectory is.

I’ve shot my Glocks and 1911 to 100 and beyond fairly often.
they do quite well on steel and I’ve dropped a few coyotes with them.
Hold the the front sight a bit proud of the rear and bang away.

"Perishable skill" takes on a whole new meaning when the plane drops you in the Brooks Range and you're carrying sticks.

A sidearm may be the only thing that keeps me from becoming a Treadwell snack.

I used to be a member 20 years ago and shot a TC contender in various center-fire cartridges. Mostly bottle neck. I also shot my Ruger MK II. Out to 100 and 200 yards respectively. Open sight but my eyes were younger then. I on occasion would shoot my 1911 in .45. 230gr lead at around 1100 fps if I remember correctly. Would take down the targets if I hit them right. It's a lot of fun. I recommend trying it.

Jim Rockwell is making a new stock for it so I can mount a Harris bipod..... Coyotes and Badgers in eastern Oregon probably won't like that.

Defiantly doable, I've shot my 10mm 1911 at 50 yards a bit, I don't think I'll push past that with the open sights. I used to shoot my scoped blackhawk at 100 yards almost every weekend and took a couple whitetails at close to that distance. Its been years since I've done any shooting at that distance with it and I would have to do a lot of practice shooting to be comfortable hunting with it again.

There’s a challenge on ARF for 25 MOA with a pistol, many many many can’t do it. We did a local shoot this fall and that exact challenge was up as one of them. I think it was ten shots on three targets at 25m. Many showed up expecting to clean house on that and couldn’t keep all their shots on the 8.5x11 sheet of paper the target was on let alone keep the ~6” group required to make 25 MOA. Many had significant zero issues as well even the if they had fair groups.

First thing to do for the 100 yard shots (assuming you have good fundamentals) is get a good zero. That doesn’t happen at 30’, probably not even at 25 yards. Second thing is understand the drop (9mm is about 10-12” at 100 y). I have a rough time consistently hitting the 10” plate off the back porch with RDS (320 and 1911). I’m much better, probably ~80% hits, with irons (1911, USP, X5, M&P).

Not sure if it’s the size of the dot that messes me up or just not enough practice but I don’t get frustrated with irons so that’s usually what I grab if I’m just gonna throw a few bullets off the porch. Now shooting fast at steel is a whole other game and I’m way faster with RDS. Go figure.

1. No...I have not ever been to the BR...it's a bucket list thing. I was hog hunting in the pics above.
2. You hit the nail on the head and one of my primary concerns is zeroing the gun. It's not like zeroing in a rifle at 100 yards. I have no idea where to set it.
3. I do know my probable bullet drop between 20 and 100 yards will be 3 to 6 inches with 50+" of penetration into ballistics gel. A hot & heavy, hard cast bullet designed to stop dangerous game. But i need to be confident I can put rounds in the CNS under pressure. I wanna get some quality coaching and then practice practice practice like my life depended on it. Best case scenario...I only use the range time to film impressive shooting like some other guys on youtube. LOL

Maybe a little farther than you want but the distance is easily doable.

When I competed the course of fire was 50, 100, 150, and 200 meters only using iron sights.
I used a Thomson Center Contender chambered in 3030 Cal. and once in a while a Dan Wesson .357.

When I hunted with the TC I took 4 nice bucks. Biggest was a 5x7 with a 27" spread.

Just a quick update, hired a trainer for two hours, he changed my grip a wee bit and had me lock both elbows. Before I left I was keeping a decent group at the indoor range max of 25. Felt pretty good. Also learned how to transition between red dot and iron sights. Yeah...I was struggling with that even with the Hawkins suppressor sights clearly visible in the optic. Now I just need to continue practicing and start shooting outside at greater distances.

Shooting from a standing position shooting at a full size silhouette at 100 yards isn’t to difficult at all. I only shoot irons. I’m not good enough to shoot small with a pistol. I don't shoot them nearly enough and when I do it is usually only for speed and rounds on target at closer ranges on larger targets.

This is my hunting pistol. I have shot it out to 125 yards and it is pretty accurate. As long as I shoot 158 grain ammunition. Yes I cheat also it has a pro point scope on it.

Nice piece. I won't be "hunting" with my 10mm...it's strictly a sidearm to defend against the unlikely.

I enjoy shooting handguns at extended ranges. I am a huge fan of Ross Seyfried, Elmer Keith, Skeeter Skelton, John Linebaugh and so on. In one of Seyfried's articles, he set a standard of 10 MOA, open sights, off your two hind feet, unsupported. i adopted this standard early on. While at first blush, this seems ridiculously difficult, the average person with the right amount of effort and practice can achieve and maintain this level of accuracy. For me, handgun shooting is a quickly perishable ability that i must stay on top of. I believe a 5" x 5" square at 50 yards, and shooting regularly can consistently be hit 4 out of 5 times. and when I'm able to continuously practice at this distance, I can stay on top of it. If i am consistently shooting the 5x5 @ 50, then moving out to a 10" x 10" square @ 100 can be hit just as consistently. The cartridge and bullet weight being shot has little to do with the ability at 100. I run single actions from .32 H&R up to my .500 Linebaugh. With 260 gr Keith bullets out of a 44 mags at 1400 fps out of 5.5" barrel or even one load in my .500 Linebaugh of a 468 gr LBT LFN at 950 fps out of a 5-1/2" barrel. Start getting out past 100 an then certain bullet weights and velocity can help. Bottom line is don't be intimidated. Just like anything, put in the work and its achievable. Some of us have to work harder to achieve it than others. I am by no means a natural hand gun shot.

We have a 2/3 IPSC silhouette at 100yds and often take turns seeing who can hit it the most with my MK IV standing/freehand. Lots of fun.
