Plan to get a L3 Harris PVS14

There are a lot of small custom shops that build out devices and will let you pick specific tube specs you want: Apollo Gear, Darq Industries, Steele Industries, Custom Night Vision...and many more. And those guys are all pretty cool and will be happy to guide you through the process and answer questions.

Also, the guys at Strictly Offsensive Kit are really squared away on this stuff and have an actual factory L3 PVS-14 available on their site right now.

Actually I want L3 Harris unfilmed WP. Plan to mount onto my rifle with red dot.
Sure. Everyone else can jump in here and add to this, but that is definitely not the most ideal way to go. Mount it to your head on a helmet and run passive night vision with a red dot on your rifle. For so many reasons.

I didn’t think the 14s were rated for sustained use on any weapon system.

I think up to .223 and maybe subsonic 300Blk.

Basically this is a good way to burn a hole in a tube while limiting your ability to scan/navigate.

If you run a 14 on your head, shooting passive is still easily achievable.
Only way I ever ran any of my sets was on a helmet.

I know we ran them on a carbine from time to time in the .mil machine, but those weren’t our personal ones so it didn’t matter to us.

Listen to NHPiper. And no one's warranty covers damage from weapons mounting a 14. And it's painfully obvious what happened, no good story will cover it. Why risk damaging your expensive investment for a less than ideal way to implement it?

Helmet mount and shoot passive and/or with IR laser.

Thanks for everybody's input/wisdom.
What I don't like about IR laser it'll give away your position if the opposing force is also on NODs. Like a beacon.
That's the beauty of rifle mounted NODs. You do have them on your red dot without giving away your position. Of course downside is damaging the unit.

Yeah so what's describing is what's called "passive aiming."

You can still do this with a HELMET MOUNTED PVS14. Basically your looking through the 14 on your HELMET (not married to the rifle) and witnessing the Aimpoint, Eotech, RMR, etc. through the 14. You may find you need a riser mount for your optic. You will likely find you need to slightly modify your shooting position if your doing the old skewl grandpa taught me to shoot turkey necking your head over to the side.

Your head will be more upright when shooting passive.

And back to the "IR use will get me kilt" thing :) The idea is you shoot and move. If you are static and using nothing but an IR laser shooting from the same place then yeah.

Really, you need to be able to do both.

Of course downside is damaging the unit.

Yeah, that's a downside. If you're so worried about other folks with NODs being able to spot you from far away, then set your RDS to the NV brightness setting and tweak your setup so that you can view it through your NODs. Passive aiming works, yes, but is nowhere near as fast and easy as active aiming with a LAM.

Like everyone else has said, aiming passive through the helmet is just as easy. Good luck navigating around with the NVD on your head as well. If you have to shoot and scoot, you will have to flip back to a white light unless you have a 14 on your other eye.

Correct guys!
Actually I did that, just without a riser. Left eye on PVS14 and right eye on the aimpoint.

BTW is there such a thing IR laser and illuminator with no red/purple glow when seen with naked eyes?

Higher nm ir output will have much less glow, but not really.

IMO its a total nonissue, dont let anyone get close enough to you to see the glow. If your trying to be sneaky breeky you shouldn't be using IR illumination anyway.

Add jrhenterprises.com to your list of potential pvs14 dealers. I bought my first ever NV from them a couple of months ago. It was an outstanding experience and price. I am already saving up for some more purchases from them in the future!
