Hey guys I’m looking for some help here. I’m here doing lots of research and trying to learn as much as I can. I’m still very new to all of this and don’t know enough to do this myself. I picked up a Remington 700 5R in 308 after seeing it was the best bang for the buck and seeing it was what you guys recommend. Thanks!

I ordered a Nikon Monarch Scope 5-20x44 #8424

I have been trying to order a set of rings and a base for a week or two. I was going to take it in to a local shop but I don’t trust any shops around here to help me and do it “right”. I then called optics planet and they needed to know a lot of things that I just don’t know about the gun to order the base and rings. Can anyone help me out? I did read the sticky’s and I’m just not comfortable ordering this stuff and picking a good brand for my combo. One thing I figured out is I don’t think I need the 20moa base because I won’t be shooing more the 500 yards max. I have a budget of about $250ish for the rings and base. I think I need steel rings also? If you could help me out and get me some part numbers so I can just call and order this stuff? I did search but could not find some one with my combo. I greatly appreciate you time and help to get me out to the range and get in to some long range fun!!!!

Re: Please help a New guy with rings and a base

There are a TON of options out there that are all GREAT so don't be too worried if you don't get what's "perfect" or "the best" because everything is so close. A reputable dealer will likely allow you to exchange them if they don't fit your gun the way you would like. If all else fails, good base/rings that are well taken care of really don't lose much of their value and you will probably be able to sell them at a minimal loss.

You can't go wrong with any of the rings in your price range, but you may want to consider an economical option in the beginning to see how you shoot with what you've got and make changes accordingly. Nothing can substitute for personal experience and that information is invaluable. Remember, an ultra low scope is useless in a rifle with too high of a comb and visa versa. The end goal of all of this is to easily, comfortable and repeatedly be able to get into the same position and obtain a sight picture when you shoulder the rifle with a good cheek weld. Everyone is built different therefore that "sweet spot" will be different for everyone.

I use Nightforce Ultralite Medium (1") rings and a Nightforce 20moa base on a Remington LTR. The scope has a 50mm objective with sunshade and Butler Creek scope caps and I'm sure I could drop down to Nightforce low rings (0.885"). I was getting all bent out of shape that I could have my scope lower, etc, etc, etc.... I decided to just shoot the thing and go from there, glad I did. After shooting for a while, I realized my stock was really the weak part of my system because I just cannot get comfortable behind it. Some guys at the range allowed me to shoulder their rifles and I could've probably fell asleep on a few. Not my stock, I could change the rings all day, or continue to build the comb but in the end, it just doesn't fit me and it was a workout to hold the same position. Glad I didn't spend that money on new rings because I can apply it to a stock that will be more comfortable and eliminate the need to get ultra low rings because it has an adjustable comb.

Hope the info helps, I know how you feel. Good luck with your search.

I've had very good results with Seekins bases and rings.
Low rings would work fine with your scope.

Re: Please help a New guy with rings and a base

There are plenty of good rings/bases out there, don't get hung up on a particular brand or finding the "best", any quality system will do, especially with a light recoiling .308. More importantly, I haven't seen it mentioned, is actually having the base/rings/scope mounted properly. Alignment needs to be verified and lapped in if needed, the scope should be leveled with the action, the base screws should be checked for proper length for clearence/holding, all the screws should be torqued properly and locktited, etc....you can have the nicest scope and mounting available, but if the screws are loose or too tight and the rings are twisting your scope, you will be losing accuracy.

You might want too look at TPS rings, price wise they are less then Seekins but they're still a premium scope ring. The person that helped me select pieces for my gun, recommend them to me and they have been great.
