I'm looking for some advice on a polytech (chinese) m14s. I've read that some rework is warranted, specifically starting with a USGI bolt conversion. I understand Warbirdscustomguns.com of fultan do this fairly routinely. Does anyone have experience with these Chinese made m14s? What advice would you have and is it worth putting the $ into it, or would it be better to just go the way of a Springfield should one want to have a m1a type?

Thanks

Re: Polytech m14s

Springfield makes investment cast receivers, poly receivers are forged, gives you more strength. With a good heat treat, I hear they can be very solid.

Also the gas cylinders and pistons are chrome lined, so you can't mix USGI cylinders/pistons with poly cylinders/pistons. No reason not to keep your poly cylinder as far as I know though.

I believe the bolt conversion will be the biggest difference you'll run into. Polys can be very solid, many people use them. If you can get it for less than a springfield, I'd do it. You can always worry about the bolt conversion later.

I had a polytech M14 for a short while and got rid of it. I watched a guy shave a sliver off the bottom of the receiver with his pocket knife. The steel is very soft. There are things you can do to help with all the problems but the "juice ain't worth the squeeze". Go with the Springfield.

I need that guy to sharpen my knives! Sure it wasn't a play-doh receiver?

Re: Polytech m14s

If you could find a cheap Poly it would be worth it, but the cheapest I have seen one was a hair under 1000 about 2 years ago. People see a M14 clone, and they assume its worth the same as a M14
