I have a mint condition Model 70 heavy barreled rifle in .243 win (serial # dates it to 1959). The rifle is completely stock as it came from the factory back in 1959 with the exception of being equipped with a 12x unertl scope. Did these rifles come with hammer forged or cut rifled barrels back then?

Re: Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 question

cut rifled , Winchester tried cold hammer forging but were not happy with results due to wrong steel. If your gun is in a sporter stock with the mottled look on the 26" barrel it is a varmint rifle, same as the target save the marksman stock. If you will post a photo I can tell. I collect, shoot mod 70 varmints if you ever consider selling.

Yep. U got the real deal Winchester made 904 in 220 swift and 4610 in .243 .Great rig in a a great do all caliber ive had some 1 1/4 inch 5 shot groups ( at 300 yds) with fed factory 70 gr BTs with my 243. good scope to, yours looks like an ultra varmint with the calibrated head, I have one in 15X it lives on a mod 52 target. PM me if U ever want to move 243 with or without Unertl.

Very fine rifle! Looks to be in sweet shape, too. I could never have something like that, because I'd shoot the hell out of it!

Re: Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 question

You cannot hurt them unless U cook em with long strings of hot loads. I bought one mint( I thought) out of the midwest that some cat got on a hot dog town and could not stop shooting. throat was toast but gunsmith did right by me, he had no idea it was fried, looked brand new outside. I shoot mine 10-15 times a year, Will not own a gun that I do not have zeroed and ready to go. I am a sucker for the old school tack drivers. those old geezers would take Bobs gun and knock a crow out of a pecan tree at 300 yards no problem!!

You got me going now ! LOL here is a shot of my swift a 59' vintage, same mottled SS barrel. It will shoot with custom rigs costing many bucks more, it shoots so good with federal and hornady ammo that I do not even handload for it. even shot the old yellow box winchester super X stuff great.
