From the Remington history on the 40X, it seems that in 1960, it was developed to be the best target rifle on the market. Sometime around 1964 or 65, Remington went to the SS barrel with a recessed taget crown. Before that time, there was no recessed crown and all the barrels were blue.

Picked up one a few years ago that may be one of the pre-64/65 models. Any historians have a feel for this as a 1000K rifle. I think the twist is 1:11.25? An idea of the value would be nice info also. Not mint but good to very good condition.

Re: Pre 65 40X

Finally got a response from Remington. It was not what I thought it was, in terms of production year. It's a repeater, produced in 1972.

The history on the web said that after 1965, Remington went with SS barrels and a full recessed crown. Mine is blue with a slight "V" crown at the mussle. Still, I am happy to have a piece of that quality, and at the price I paid for it.

It's a .308, and the trigger is adjustible with an allen key. 43 grs of 4064, 168 gr. Berger molys gave me a 5 shot ragged hole at 100 on Saturday.
