Pre-Bann AR-15

I bought an AR-15 long time ago and instead of getting a flat top I ended up getting one with a carry handle on it. Anyway I'm wanting to change the upper reciever and leave it 223 but which manufactures would you recommend and what barrel length and twist for long range shooting 300-500 yds? Any help would be great.

Just about anything from 14.5-20" in barrel length will work for 500yds and under. Still, a 16" or 18" bbl in 7 or 8 twist would be preferable.

If you know anyone with tools to build AR-15's they're pretty easy to put together. That way you can choose exactly the right components.

More info about your current AR would be helpful. Also, unless your state has a ban in effect, preban status doesn't mean anything anymore since the AWB sunset.

Might want to put the make of the lower.

I have been told that some Colts are not compatible with all uppers.

I agree with the Bravo Company comment. Danial Defense is quality also.

If you live in California and have a Pre Ban that was not registered, you could be at serious risk of finding yourself in front of a Judge.

If it is registered, put a new upper on it and have fun. If you live in a free state, Pre Ban means nothing to you.

Bought new from a dealer and I don't live in CA

I have been just thinking maybe sell it and buy a Les Baer 223 IPCS Action Model Might be a better route go? On there page it says "Geissele Two-Stage Trigger Group (Ultra Single Stage Trigger Substituted On Request)"

What's the difference between the Two-Stage and Ultra Single?

LoL? Really? DPMS is a manufacturer. Buying stuff through them probably isn't the best way to get the lowest price or the fastest shipping.

I really don't know how well they shoot. Some people report good results. When I looked at them way back, the quality wasn't all that great. Lower parts kits are mainly what I observed.

Is there a certain price range you are looking at? What's the make on your original AR? What's the configuration of your original AR? What do you specifically want to use this upper for? You're not really giving us enough info to work with.

When it comes to AR's it's all about the barrel. That is where the accuracy lies. Then a simple free float fore-end and finally the trigger. Everything else is fluff.

Since it is a pre-ban and you apparently don't live in a ban state...sell it to someone behind enemy lines who can't own an AR with all the "evil" features and then go by whichever feature-filled replacement your heart desires.

There is certainly nothing wrong with the Les Baer AR-15s. They are proven performers!

Ok I really want to keep it under $3000 Figuring I can always sell my other AR which is a STOCK ver to off set some of the cost and it has maybe 350 rounds through it. 24" Barrel and not a heavy barrel either.

Well like others here have said accuracy equals quality barrel and trigger for starters so I wanted the new upper with a heavier barrel and was going to have a Geissele trigger put in as well and it would be allot more accurate gun to go practice long range shooting! Instead of building another gun I was just maybe thinking about buying one done by Les Baer

What's the difference between the Two-Stage and Ultra Single?

+1 for BCM. I bought a m4 16inch upper from them, simple amazing, as good if not better than bushmaster, colt, ect.

Id love to get a 18 inch for more of a precision thing but I hit 20inch steel plates at 300 400 and 500 pretty consistently with the m4 upper and a red dot!
I love my BCM.

I built this a couple months ago. The lower is off a dpms, the first ar id ever bought, the upper was pretty cheap so I sold it and pinned this BCM upper to it.

The upper is a 1 in 7 twist (good for shooting heavier bullets for greater distances), chrome lined, high end, stupid cheap price.
This is what made me a believer...and a customer.

I was in the same place you were 2 months ago. I had an ar that was acceptable except for the fact that I hated the receiver. I wanted to just change receivers but its more trouble than its worth. The upper that I bought was under 500 dollars, all it needed was handguards.

Alright. I've built 2 SPR's which seem to meet your criteria. One from a high caliber sales Mk12 barrel, the other from a Compass Lake Engineering barrel. Both shoot phenomenally, but the CLE barreled one is the only one I've worked up loads for. My final load worked very well and printed .5moa w/ 77gr SMK at 2810ft/s.(Ramshot TAC 24.5gr w/SR mag CCI primers) This has worked very well even out to 930yds. (70% hits on an IPSC steel with calm winds. Nothing more than 4mph.)

If I was you, I'd track down a Compass Lake Engineering barrel with matched bolt. Get an SPR contour (18") or a SAM-R contour (20"). SPR contour is very handy and has meat where it needs it. Seems to hold up well to long extended strings of fire. CLE barrel also has functioned perfectly. I've run around 1k suppressed without cleaning and no malfunctions. No malfunctions during 2 competitions, (which always seem to be where malfunctions happen.)

If you don't want to go through the hassle of putting things together and tracking down/ order a CLE bbl. Then just buying a MK12 Mod1 upper from High Caliber Sales would give you a perfect upper for this kind of shooting.

Oh yeah, and CLE barrels come in 2 flavors. One from a Krieger blank and the other from a Douglas Air Gauged blank. I'm running the Douglas, which works, but I bet the Krieger would be even sweeter.

I have a Les Baer IPSC. It's definately a cool and accurate rifle. It has the 2-stage trigger and it's a work of beauty. The 2-stage works just like it says in 2 stages. 1st stage is the take up and the 2nd is the release/break. instead of having 5 pounds of straight pull, it has 2 pounds of take up pull and 3 pounds of release pull for a total of 5 pounds of pull. I really hope that I'm explaining this right. Someone please feel free to help out if I explained it wrong. After a couple of magazines it almost becomes boring to shoot because of the accuracy. Of course the closest range to my house has only a 100 yard range. That rifle is definately more accurate than me with handloads.
