Gunsmithing pre threaded barrel install

Re: pre threaded barrel install

a short chambered blank will only save the gunsmith the actual threading time, setup will otherwise be the same and will also require the smith to have a chamber reamer. I am guessing it will be a minimal savings, if it cost extra to have that work done at the barrel maker, I am guessing it may actually cost more overall. If you get a long chambered barrel, the smith can trim to fit, but I think overall a short or long chambered blank is meant more for the do it yourselfer and not really going to save any money from a smith who is already set up to do the whole job for you.

Re: pre threaded barrel install

Like Gaslight said its only saving time on the threads, IF that.

Threads might have to be chased still, and if the Remington has been trued and opened up, the aftermarket barrel wont even screw on correctly because the threads will be undersized.

We'd charge $200 to install a short chambered/pre-threaded barrel, and put our name and guarantee on it.
It's almost just as much work as starting with a contoured blank.

Plus, the smith will be expected to produce a half MOA rifle with a barrel that someone else did work on, and ran a reamer in.
The reamer your smith uses, and the reamer the barrel company used will not be the same. If it was short chambered with a standard reamer, then your smith uses a minimum spec "tactical match" reamer.... I dunno. I just dont like the idea.

Im not a fan of short chambered/pre-threaded barrels.

Re: pre threaded barrel install

Any reason you don't pick up a phone and call a smith in your area?
here is a link to a list of smiths

I'd guess 200 is about right. Remember, there is no such thing as a quality drop-in part. If it drops in then the tolerences will have to be large enough to fit a majority of guns. Spend the extra money on a quality part.

What caliber and what action? I've got a 700 PSS barrel in 308 I'll be pulling in the next couple months
