Re: "Precision" LMT MWS .308
I to would be very interested in a side-by-side comparison between the CL and the SS barrels. My interest in the LMT MWS differs from your in that I use it as a DMR rather than a precision rifle. My Friends and I scatter steel targets from 300-800 yards and time each shooter giving pointes for hits, time and rounds left in a 20 round magazine. It is a work in progress. However, I can share results with various loads I tested with the CL barrel. This data was generated when the rifle was new to me. Since shooting for this data I have taken the Rifles Only online training, (which address precision shooting with an AR) and fired nearly 3000 rounds through the rifle. The rifle is more accurate than this data implies. However, it is an honest comparison of loads and that skill level.
Data is from 5 shot groups (average of three) at 100 yards.
Factory loads
American Eagle 168g OTM M1A load 1.31”
Priv Partizam 168 g OTM .89”
FIOCCHI 168g Match 1.04”
BVAC 168g AMAX .95”
FGMM 175g 1.21”
Hornady TAP FPD 168g 1.32
LC M118LR .82
Surplus Ammo
Radway Green 155 g standard load* 2.26
LC M80 (delinked) 150 g 2.66
Aussie 150 grain 150g 1.27”
Hintenburger 150g 1.67”
I won’t take the time to post all my reloading data but will share a few that I use most. All brass is once fired LC, trimmed, debured, flash holes uniformed and sorted by weight.
42g RL15 168g Hornady AMAX, CCI BR primer. .86”
42.3g RL15, Win LR primer, 150g Hornady FMJ 1.56”
43.1g RL15, FGM 210 primer, 175g SMK. .74”
A note on the 43.1g RL15/175g SMK load. This load was presented to me as an exact duplicate of the M118LR load and I believe it is with the exception that the RL15 used in M118LR has a flash suppressant added. The POA and POI on this load and M118LR are identical and they chrono within 6 fps of each other.
These photos have been posted to death but I’ll post them here to illustrate the accuracy of the hand load or M118LR. They were also taken after I had used the rifle more and had some training. The paper target was fired at 100 yards and averaged .75” with the uncalled flyer and .5” without it. The first steel target was fired at 700 yards and the group measures just under 7.5 inches. The second photo of the steel target is a second group on the same target and I did not measure it. However, the four shots in the neck area are easily sub ½ moa but again I have an uncalled flyer. These last two photos were shot using a SS 1-4X24 HD scope set on 4X and I was testing the capabilities of the scope rather than the rifle. I simply quartered the target and fired. I will revisit this distance when my 5-20X50 SS HD scope comes in and see how it does. I hope this helps. IMO there are to many “glamour shot” of this rifle wearing the latest accessories and to few showing how it shoots.
