Precision rifle safety manipulation?

At what points should the safety be engaged and disengaged on a PR? I'm wondering what mil/leo and classes are teaching. On an AR safety manipulation is so easy that I'm in the habit of engaging it any time I stop shooting, but it seems like a lot of stocks don't allow for easy manipulation of a tang safety (AICS for one). So is this a Kalashnikov safety situation? Do most people only use it for loaded storage and movement? I generally load, safe, set up for my shot, disengage, and then fire, but it seems like on a non flat range, or in a situation where you don't know when you need to break the shot, that could be problematic.
Interested to hear what you guys think.

Try just using common sense...you may find that a bit dangerous if you lack in that department.

Safety on if I need to move with a chambered round. Safety off otherwise. Always thumb it fwd before going for the trigger, that way I don't need to remember what I did with it last.

Good question. I don't completely trust safeties. I raise the bolt handle as well as or sometimes instead of using the safety. Don't know if this is best thing to do or not. Obviously, an unloaded gun is the safest gun, but as asked it's not always practical for Leo/mil or even hunters.
I know personally that Remmy triggers/safeties can fail from dirt/dust, worn springs, loose screws, shitty trigger jobs, etc.

IMO, the only really trustworthy bolt action rifle safety is the Mauser design that physically blocks the firing pin from moving regardless of what the trigger or sear do.

Part of this is for ease of range control, part of it is common sense, and another part being just how I was taught.

We teach bolt up, and to ignore the safety on a bolt-action rifle. If your eye isn't on the glass, you have no legitimate business with a locked action. You've got people out there that have chased their trigger weights down well under a pound, and who knows if their triggers and safeties have been properly adjusted and checked.

If the bolt is unlocked, but still closed, everyone can SEE that from some distance away, and have confidence that shooter isn't about to touch one off.

Different action types, different safeties on each of them.... The bolt is the lowest common denominator and the surest mechanical boom-preventer on the rifle.

Semi's - Different ball game. Go ahead and use the safety.

I'd seen a couple vids where people raised the bolt handle when on the move and wondered about it. Very good points all around. I'll have to try this out.
